I got a \'phone call from IP

After sky wanting me to transfer my phone bill to them,
After British Gas to say that they could provide electricity cheaper (they already do).
After a call to tell me that an old friend had shot himself the night before. (not a joke)

Then, IPC mags trying to convince me that I wanted another years subscription for PBO magazine. I didn't want another year of PBO's "how to make a kettle out of plywood for 27p" but I gave in and bought a year of YM.

All that and we are Ex Directory.

Ian

Data protection act springs to mind. Did you place a tick in the appropriate box when you signed up for Sky, Gas, BT etc.

Do a search for "Data Commission" or "Data Protection Act" from Google and that will give you all sorts of answers.

Re: Junk mail revenge

This is simple, just costs the envelope (re use original to be really cheap).

Stick a label on the junk addressing it back to originator, then post it. But remember NO STAMP. They will have to pay.

Upsets them no end.

Wish I could tell you.

If I had a solution to this. I'd be a rich man. My name is on our company website and makes me a target for all sorts of rubbish.

Some hints:

Never click on the "unsubscribe" buttons on such emails; all it does is confirm to the mailer that your e-mail address is live and can therefore be sold on to some other pest

Try not to have your email address available anywhere on the Web - not just company sites, but chat rooms, user groups etc get trawled by junk e-mailers. (However - and Kim would no doubt confirm - your details are secure on MBY unless you put your email address on a posting).

There are e-mail filter programmes that work in various ways, both blocking specific addresses and also using certain criteria to block junk mail. As a Company, we are in the process of spending a lot of money on such a system, to see if it works. I'll believe it when I see it.

Some junk mailers just pick on every available permutation of name and e-mail address on a random basis, on the principle that a few will get to a real destination. Don't think there's much you can do about them, except not reply (see above).

I have a private home e-mail address that I have applied the above principles to and I never get junk mail (except from my ISP), so they can work.

Simplest solution is not to have a computer; but then we'd all have to do some work......

I searched around for the cheapest bit of SD memory, and found it at eBay.. NO THIS IS NOT AN ADVERT.. trotted along, ordered it and thought no more.

During that night and since then, I have been inundated with pop-ups and interventions (where you ask for one url and another appears before it!!).

Moral: have nothing to do with eBay for openers.

Hard luck with the spam, James. Have you tried 'Mailwasher' (www.mailwasher.net). It's free. It's automatic. It will go fetch the headers off your mail so you can decide whether to bounce, delete or receive. You can preview the mail if you want. There are even some types of addresses it will automatically bounce for you. It's first rate and I would esp. recommend it to anyone who is downloading emails via GSM (like I was doing in France).

Re: Wish I could tell you.

Thanks, John. I've heard of Mailwasher and will certainly give it a try if I ever have problems at home. At work our I.T. Director insists on spending money to achieve the same end, and reading the riot act to people who download software from the Web - a pity, but I don't entirely blame him.

On reflection, however, I'm not sure how I would survive without my regular diet of emails from the widows/orphans of deceased African Dictators who want me to look after their money. Or the suspiciously nubile Russian girls who are so eager to make my acquaintance ;-)

DeeGee Norton Firewall doesn't even allow the adverts on *this* site to show on my computer. I'm not doing adverts for these guys, but their software works.

BT Openworld...

BT Openworld is currently running a free anti-spam service for its subscribers. It seems to work quite well - automatically dumping junk e-mails into a "Spam" folder. I'm certainly getting far fewer junk e-mails since they started this.

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) runs the Telephone Preference Scheme (TPS). The TPS is enforced by the Data Protection Commissioner. If you register with the TPS (which is free), companies and other organisations are not allowed to make uninvited phone calls to you to market or promote their goods or services.
