My problem with all these systems other than the drip feed heaters-reflex etc is their complexity-Airtop;thermotop etc; Mess-all solid fuel;Problems/mess-Taylors etc.
I live with multifuel stoves;oil fired central heating etc and as far as I am concerned on my boat there is nothing better than a flued gas heater-Calor or similar-simple to light and operate.
In its absence my oven and gas rings work quite happily as a substitute as they do on cold mornings in my house.
The only solid fuel stove I would entertain is the Davys Hotpot. but then again just looking and my coal stained hands(my multifuel stove at home) I wonder!
It sounds romantic but the reality is somewhat different.

Your mention of the Davey Hotpot led me to this thread which mentions others worth investigating...

Under sail?

Not sure if I missed anything or if my experience is unusual, but I had a boat with a solid fuel stove, it was great for heat, but it's biggest drawback was when you were on the port tack the cycle reversed so that the chimney became the air inlet and the air inlet became the exhaust, so the cabin filled with smoke.
I had planned to fit an extension to the flue so that you could tack it, but never got around to it.
I reckoned that the High pressure from mr bernoulli was the cullprit, hence my wish to tack the flue . The Flue was on the port side.
