So today I tried some liquid moly diesel purge on a 3GM30 (my own one for once!)

I had a leaky injector.... Well probobly two, yanmar injectors in gm's are pretty renowned for sticking and also for thier price!

I thought I would try out some some snake oil to push the injector out and rebuild job down the road a bit.

I have been using liquid moly stuff in my car for a while now, and noticed a product called diesel purge, also heard about it with VW audi groups PD engines as well but never used it. Wasn't expensive 14 quid for a litre on amazon, next day as well!

Anyway set too it warmed the engine up a bit, exhibited the usual one cylinder start with second then third. - whipped the inlet fuel line off stuck in in the can, ran at mid revs for a half an hour, used about half the product. Instructions say to stick the return into the can, seemed like to much work, spill on these engines is fairly low anyway.

The result well certainly seems audibly better, idles more stable, I would be inclined to think that it's made a decent impression on restoring the injector spray pattern so I'm fairly impressed. Start from cold result still to be seen, and I will report back, but on the face of it it seems that this does work and will to an extent remiedy the common slightly clogged/stuck injectors that we see from engines sitting in yachts.

For base, injectors have been done before I'm not sure how long ago, but I assume not long before I bought the boat 3 years ago as they were shiny still! so roughly 1000 hrs on them. Engine has 3500 hours on it now.

No connection to liquid moly, just a skeptical engineer happy to be proved wrong!

I haven't used that product but have used a fuel additive of various sorts over the last few years.
The latest one I have used does seem to have resulted in the engines running quite smoothly,
Not that they were running roughly.
But there has been no slightly lumpy running after extended slow speeds and less noticeable smoke on start up and when idling.
Not a scientific appraisal but I would say additives can help

2-Ethylhexanol (or something very close) seems a common ingredient

diesel purge has a good reputation on both Volvo and Mercedes forums as well. It’s certainly something I’d consider trying.

I'm skeptical around snake oil stuff too but a bottle of Wyns diesel injector cleaner stopped the sooty deposits all over the transom from my 1GM 10 with a couple of hours hard running.

Just a bit of hard running did it for me on my old boat. a VP2003 in a Snapdragon 24 was far too much, but it was free when my old engine died. It would run fine, but, rarely raised a sweat, so it would get smoky after a while. A few minutes flat out would raise a smoke screen like a destroyer on the Murmansk run, then it would clear, and all would be fine again.

I do add Injector Cleaner to both my petrol Volvo and my Diesel Perkins ...... no need to buy brand name ... they are all basically solvents.

I would suggest though - well before any emissions tests !! So it has time to clear !!

I’m sceptical too but recently tried a Forte diesel injector cleaner, added to the fuel filter during a service.

Not sure if it did anything but I did get the satisfaction of knowing I’d done my best to look after the engine.

My favourite advert for magic repair fluids is the Australian "Wynn's Start Ya Bastard"

If we go back in "history" .....

There was the car that was driven for xxxxxxxxxx miles with no oil in it, but the magic elixir using Teflon ......

There was the replacement for Spark Plugs based on 'WW2 Spitfire' .... ?????? ..... which supposedly used 'Spitfire Starter Plugs' ... supposed to 'shoot' ignition sparks into the fuel-air mix !

Don't forget the magnets around fuel lines, also supposedly used on Merlin engines.

Its funny you mention that actually ....

OK - that particular item is complete utter rubbish as you / we know .... BUT .... in the years adding various to fuels ... the flow meters recording the additive rate injection were magnetic ......
Later when we had to replace one of the meters ..... not a nice day for the finances !! .... we temporarily fitted a normal impellor flow meter ..... which eventually ended up our usual meters .... a price drop from about 5000 quid to less than 50 !!

Was it the Wynns or just a couple of hours hard running that cleared it out?

It had been dumping increasing amounts of soot on the transom all season which it hadn't done before. The engine oil went dark more quickly then usual too so the best explanation I can think of is there was some crud in the injector which was either affecting the spray pattern or allowing it to leak both of which would causing overfuelling and the resultant soot as well as contaminating the lube oil.

Once the Wynns went into the tank it cleaned up its act almost instantly and was back to normal for the last few trips
