LadyOldBoots said no thanks, if it wasn't good enough for her yesterday, it's not good enough for her today; I'm relieved really after the trouble she caused at the GUU Night of Shame.

On a serious note, and making no comment on the rights or wrongs, how have they been able to remain male-only for so long? I thought even private clubs were forced to avoid gender discrimination about ten years ago; there was much hoo-hah in the paper about golfing clubs for instance.

Still plenty of pockets of stone age sexism. Just look at the male primogeniture still favoured by the aristocracy. Also most religious establishments. Freemasons. I think they basically get away with it until someone challenges through the courts (or threatens to). Perhaps that's what happened here, and knowing they'd lose any court battle to defend the male-only membership, they changed. I bet the requirements of the voting system still mean that, in effect, the membership will continue to be all-male. I do understand that there are times when many of us want to spend time in the company of our own sex, but there are better ways to do that than this type of thing.

I thought it had been agreed that that was to change? If Kate had given birth to a girl she would have had the same position in the line up as the boy.

I could be wrong though.
In any event, it should happen; the old rules are/were an anachronism.

I believe it's a quirk in the law. Something like - you can have male-only/female-only clubs but you cant have mixed clubs with single sex nights/events. Hence these clubs can still exist. I'm all in for equality - in it's pure form. But it means also doing away with such things as women-only gyms which frankly are a pathetic retrograde step taking women back 30+ years. It works both ways

Those reading carefully will note that it is being put up for a vote. No guarantee that it will be passed.

And the 'associate' members aren't allowed a vote, but perhaps are able to exert some nipple tweaking on their spouses who do have the vote.

I think it;s been voted on. Just needs to be ratified. Noones going to go against it in this day and age

Interesting that they have had the Queen as their patron, and for that matter that the Queen is willing to act as patron to associations that do not admit female members. About time she stood up for the sisters and exerted a bit of pressure.

The conservatory at the front of the RYS exists because Queen Victoria expressed a desire to visit and take tea. Naturally because she was a Lady she couldn't be let inside, but one cannot refuse the monarch. So they built her a conservatory to take tea in.

Prince Philip has been the commodore, twice I think, and in 2008 I was at a dinner for "RYS members, their crews (how I blagged the invite) and family" at which he was the guest speaker. He opened with the line "I feel honoured to be ask to speak at this dinner for members, crews and family, as throughout my life I have been severely troubled by all three." He went up in my estimation then!

I remember visiting the lovely and friendly Royal Fowey YC quite a long time ago, in there was a door with glass panel, on which in gold leaf ' Reading Room ; Gentlemen Only '.

I was very impressed but judging by the club I'm sure they kept this for a joke and historical interest.

Personally I've always found there aren't enough women in sailing anyway, they ought to be encouraged and I've found they make excellent sailors, able to deliver bacon sandwiches, mop the bilges, that sort of thing...:)
