I’ve never owned a headsail roller reefing gear. Now I want two. What do I look for?

You have a yacht that, I deduce, can cross oceans, or estuaries. The advice from John Morris seems apt, if you are considering the former.

Jonathan

The estuary sized boat is here:

She’s a Squib; a 19ft Oliver Lee keelboat, she belongs to my teenage son and she has a cockpit tent, a 15lbs CQR etc!

I think Simon sorted out the headsail roller reefing for her with post 8 on the first page of this thread!

Another vote for Sailspar ,the gear we had on the Shamrock was S/hand when we aquired and installed it .
No problems in 19 yrs of use .
U.K. Manufacture .Very little to go wrong .

Our current boat has Profurl and while robust I have had problems with the grub screws that hold the sections together, it proved very tricky to fix in situ, working aloft on a mast is comfortable by comparison. Out previous yacht had Furlex TD with the drum below deck in the anchor locker allowing us to use a proper wardrobe of full hoist sails. Furling did require more effort as the line had a couple of turns to make and the drum was quite small, we used a winch though some folk in here will be appalled at such an idea.
If I was buying another new boat and sails I would definitely go for TD.
