Hyperthetical question

I don't see a problem with it but if you don't want to put someone in that position don't ask a forumite direct just ask a general question such as is there anybody near to XXXX would fancy looking at XXXX for me if people don't want to they won't reply, more than likely you will get plenty of offers. I'm sure most people here love having a nosey around other boats anyway and would be looking for just such an excuse.

Well the idea occured to me as there is a boat in Gibraltar about two days drive.Ithought well if it was in amarina and by chance there was a fellow traveller therehe or she could have a look and give us an idea.Where I live there are a few harbours but I would be pleased to help out.I cannot travel at the momment else I would be off having alook but the wife is temporarily incapacitated, anyway It was purely hypocetical at this momment, but could be a good idea and its always enjoyable having an excuse to look at othere pepoples boats!

I have done it several times. I take a digital Camera and a notepad. What is important is to ask what is key to the prospective purchaser. Also happy to help anyone from the forum out as people help me out!

If anyone wants me to check out boats in Gibraltar or close by on the Costa del Sol let me know! Only thing is that I will question you first in detail and a beer or two always goes down well (Thanks TCM)!

No guarantee I will give the correct appraisal for you but I will let you know if it is worth travelling for! The best deals are on the CDS and Gib at the moment and I have my ear to the ground.

So YES, I will check the boat out! Which one, just PM me or put it on here.

Cheers

Paul

I would be happy to do it in my general area (ie the IW). I would be prepared to send some digital photos, comment on the accuracy or otherwise of brokers details and offer an opinion on whether I thought worth travelling any distance to have a look at.

I was interested in a boat Falmouth way a couple of years ago and would have appreciated someone who could have done similar - I nearly forked out for a basic survey. As it happened I decided against it and mentioned the boat to someone else who drove down, took one look and drove back - it was all about what wasn't in the pictures on the brokers site which a friendly pair of eyes would have spotted straight away.

Well, great success I now have good info on the situation of the boat and a general account of its condition...the idea has potential! As long as you get the beers ineven if they are in cyber space!

Well, fair enuf, tho ceratinly a lot of boats are for sale wth nice pix etc - and only when you visit do you find that the pix were taken five+ years ago etc etc. I don't think the OP is looking for a full survey. Webrcraft's idea of sending a few digipix is pretty good.

Maybe this thread would have been much better for you if you had started off "is there anyone in XYZ marina could look at a boat for me? "
Point taken - and subsequently proved correct. My flawed hyperthesis clearly lacked some of tcm's solid common sense.

(Freestyle would be happy to look at any boats for sale around Bangor, North Wales.)
