Would it be a good idea to ask a fellow formite ,who you do not know except on the forum to go and inspect aboat and to give a personel opinionThere are several boats wich are along way away that I would value an opinion, basically as I cannot at this momment travel.

People on here are usually quite obliging, so it sounds like a good idea. And if you get the opinion of several strangers that may be of more value than just the one.

If . . .

.
If I was that forumite then I might be a little worried that you might hold my asked-for opinion against me at some point in the future; provided I was sure that wasn't going to happen I would be happy to do so and I am sure many others on here would as well.

Sounds like a good idea to me, prevail on them a little further to take lots of pix as well and email them to you.

As long as you bear in mind that the forumite might have a connection with the boat, have less knowledge than you think or for some other reason give an inaccurate report, I would say it was a good idea, certainly worth doing to save you a long trip to look at a complete dog.

People's standards vary, for example one might say a boat is a good proposition while another sees scuffed gelcoat and wouldn't touch it with someone else's bargepole.

Boat View

If you can find someone on the forum in the same marina who will have a quick look .. Its a bit much though to sit at home and try to get other people to do your leg work for you . Arrange to view boats etc .. IMHO ..

This already been done, and more. Step forward Nautorious who massively helped me sort out picking up stuff in Gibraltar.

Also, I can confirm that it is extremely well-known in yottie circles that webcraft's opinion is utter codswallop.

Er incidentally, i think (nick) that nobody would be able to "come back" to you provided that you did not charge for your opinion - no consideration (=payment) means no contract.

Not being able to travel is a bit of a b*mmer really.

Imagine another forumite taking a look at it, and saying: "She's got this, that and t'other, doesn't have self-retracting drying legs, looks to my amateur's eye to be in good condition, and seems to have most of the features you are looking for. Definitely worth looking at for yourself."

Unless it's a bog-standard production boat of which there are one or two examples in your local marina, how do you do that?

Well, fair enuf, tho ceratinly a lot of boats are for sale wth nice pix etc - and only when you visit do you find that the pix were taken five+ years ago etc etc. I don't think the OP is looking for a full survey. Webrcraft's idea of sending a few digipix is pretty good.

Maybe this thread would have been much better for you if you had started off "is there anyone in XYZ marina could look at a boat for me? "

I've done this for someone several hundred miles away on a another forum. There were about three or four pictures in circulation already but he didn't know how recent they were etc. Actually they were up-to-date.

I went, took a dozen or so more interrogated the seller a bit on its history took a few notes and sent it to the potential buyer with a big caveat saying "i'm not a surveyor, nor an expert in boats - but here is what is immediately apparent to me as a layman looking at the boat". I did it because it was just along the road from me, and one day I might hope that someone would do the same for me. IIRC "my" buyer made an offer remotely (something he said he would not have done without my extra pics etc) but the seller ended up taking another (higher) offer.

You would need to be aware of the boat that the prospective "l;ooker" owns - people have prejudices. No point in asking a modern multi fanatic to go and look at an old motor sailor for example.

Good idea if forumite. I did this a few month ago but used my brother who still lives in UK. Not a good idea. I was in Sweden.

The plan was that he drove from Maidenhead to view a Nich 32 Mk 10 for me on the South coast. When he arrived he was to use his mobile to phone me so I could walk him through the viewing.

He eventually arrived and phoned me up. Spent the first ten minutes asking how I was and why I never visit him, then went on to moan about the traffic on the way down. Chatted a bit more than to get to the task in hand I wanted to make sure he was stood in front of the right boat. It was on the hard so I asked him what colour it was.

Well he exploded. IS THAT IT? You got me to drive all the way down here to ask me what colour it was? I won't go into the rest of the viewing because I gradually got so pizzed off with his attitude that I couldn't think of a thing I wanted him to look at for me without causing another tantrum.

I got the phone bill and his petrol bill. Didn't buy the boat but Mogy select the forumite with care.

OK, give us a clue. Is it really hypothetical or do you have a boat in mind and if so, where is it?

Where Mogy hangs out, I suspect Forumites are a bit scarce. So if he happens to find one that doesn't mind looking at something close and giving an opinion that might save Mogy some time, can't be bad.
I have met several people as a result of posts, common interests seem to produce like minds. No bummers yet.

Snow Lep,
Mogy's last question was about a boat in the Vigo Ria, might be the 'Hypothetical' one.

Oh, and asking a relative that one clearly has 'issues' with might not be a good idea.

Yes! There are plenty of us who could give you an honest users opinion. It could certainly save a few beer tokens and a lot of time. Let me know if I can help.
