Help sheet no 3 on Polymarines website Here.

2 part adhesive better than single pack for large or critical repairs possibly

Nick,

Yes you need some Hypalon cleaner - active ingredient is "Toluene". It's magic stuff; it wipes away dirt, grease and grime and leaves a very clean surface with little effort. Be careful handling it though - Marigolds!

The process will be the following (to BOTH dinghy and patch surfaces):

1) Clean with Toluene
2) Abrade with wet & dry
3) Apply one coat of two pack glue and leave to dry for 20mins
4) Apply another coat of glue and leave for 2 mins
5) Apply last coat of glue and leave until touch dry.
6) Bring the two surfaces together and prss down hard with blunt instrument (screwdriver handle)
7) Lave for 24hours before use.

I know this because I did my Avon last night!

The cleaner Polymarine supply (P510) appears to be a mix of acetone (aka propanone) and MEK (methylethyl ketone, aka butanone). Chandlers selling Polymarine adhesives should have the cleaner as well.

I'd use the acetone though if that was what I already had.

[/ QUOTE ] A common enough chemical but i have never noticed any magical properties, although the vapour has some nasty effects if inhaled.

just been to tcs chandlers and they said they use acetone when they have run out of toulene. i got some adhesve from the chandlers so i'll give it a go later. the hole is only about 2mm square.

The tri-nitro derivative is pretty magic (known as TNT)! Xylene is about as good and available as Thinners No 3, Hammerite thinners etc. You've probably got a few tins of it on the antifouling shelf in your shed.

[/ QUOTE ] Not half as magic as nitroglycerine, which is easier to make if done carefully /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The identified component of thinners no 3 is 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (psi-cumene)

Hammerite thinners used to contain xylene (dimethylbenzene) but it smelled very different to pure xylene (or toluene) so must have contained other things as well.

Hammerite thinners now smells like MEK (methylethylketone or butanone) the formulation of the paint and the thinners having changed several years ago.

Toluene (methylbenzene) is, or at least was, used as the solvent for contact adhesives such as Evo Stik although I noticed that the last tube I bought contained heptane so that may be changing as well.
