Hi there I have a freeman 22 with a hy drive gearbox and to change from forward, neutral or reverse it has a pole sticking up from the gearbox that you turn to select gear. It is fitted with a split pin at the bottom to a piece sticking out of the gearbox. It's really fiddly to work and was wondering can I change to a modern morse cable with selector? I have photos not sure how to put them on. Would anyone know the oil for a hy drive gearbox?
Thanks James

Have you had her long?

You get used to it honest :encouragement:
I usually use my leg to change gear

I assume it's the Morris Vedette engine with the standard gearbox, so should be sae30 in the engine and gearbox.

Hi just put her in the water today and got her two days ago. The rod is chest height and seems fiddly but maybe modern controls will be the same. I have been reading and the best I can get is ultra 15 hydraulic fluid? I will phone the freeman owners club on Monday but think it's not long been fitted. It's a ford crossflow 1600 petrol engine.

Chest height :ambivalence: I assume you're not 3' tall...

It normally looks like this

Gearbox on on that engine is usually a J type

If if it has been changed to something more modern Sheridan may not be able to help you :(

I think I need a look around one to see how things were as mine needs some TLC and things putting right. I need to know the correct oil first though as don't want to go out and cause damage to the gearbox.

yes, those are of my 23

I don't think the hy drive gearbox I have is modern. It has a little stud that comes out the top which the rod is attached to by a split pin and by turning this changes gear.

Think HY Drive was a development of Wortham Blake mechanical transmission, however the pole arrangement is most odd. Because it is hydraulic and gear selection is by merely moving the lever on the top of the box next to the oil filter, but not seen one since 1960's. The ones fitted to Seamaster boats simply had Morse single lever controls, that was what they were designed to work with.

There is a stud that comes out the top of the gearbox and a pole fits over the top with a split pin through it and turning it selects forward, neutral or reverse.

As I am new to this I am not sure how the cables fit but what you say makes sense and that cheers me up. I went out for a bit today and it went okay slowly but when opened up the throttle, the engine cut out everytime at the same position of throttle. I was told it has just been services so got an engineer to look at it in Tuesday as don't want to take my kids out until I know all is well. Thanks.
