When i bought the boat I was told the gerabox was Hurth rather than the standard Volvo unit (Engine is a MD2020). I have no info on it and cant even find a website for Hurth. Any ideas on what type of oil (and quantity) it takes?

You need to establish which gearbox it is, there will be a maker's plate on it somewhere but you may need a mirror and torch to find it. Volvo gearboxes (generally) take engine oil but Hurth gearboxes take Automatic Transmission Fluid which is very much lighter like brake fluid, red in colour probably. Using the wrong oil could seriously damage your wealth!

Did you not get any information from the previous owner, or even a clue with a container of top-up oil left on board?

I have the same engine in my boat, and it is attached to a Hurth MS12.

Most gearboxes take hydraulic oil, but the Hurth on my MD2020 takes 15W/40 engine oil - which is very convenient as it is the same oil as the engine.

Hurth is now ZF: Volvo rebadge the ZF/Hurth boxes (a small nameplate on top of the box) but you should find the name HURTH MARINE on the body of the gearbox, moulded on the cover on the rear of the driveshaft.
