Out sailing in the Solent today and my gearbox failed when I turned on the engine and put into gear. Luckily was able to sail towards Portsmouth Harbour and am a member of Sea Start who came to my rescue and after some deliberation as to the problem towed me into the nearest marina - the one I was heading for as it turned out.

However, when consulting a local engineer who also looked at the problem - it would appear the the "spindle" (my word) worked loose and was sticking out of the top of the gearbox when the filler cap was removed He had never seen such a problem before in his 25 yesrs! Clearly not a simple problem. The local giuy thought it coiuld be exhanged with a rebuit box and would not be too expensive. however, when contacting 2 Volvo dealers the cheapest price for a new box (no rebuilds longer availalbe) was £2400 plue VAT and fitting.

Does this seem the right ball park figure, or can gearboxes be rebuilt. If so where.

Problem is I'm not in my home berth and am stuck in Portsmouth. The marina is sister to my own so I have a number of free days.

Really my question is are rebuilt boxes availoable if so where, and how much. If not is £2400 the price. Do I have to bite the bullet and pay.

Engine is an Volvo MD22L

Any advice would be helpful

Not sure what gearbox you have, but we replaced ours rather than rebuilding it a few years ago. Cost of the rebuild was not far short of a new box. We got ours from Gold Arrow Marine. Very happy with there service.

From memory it was around £1k, but I could be wrong. (for a 50hp engine)

Good luck. (And "I know that feeling"!!)

Hi mate. You may be better off going for a PRM if they do one that suits your application. Cheaper to buy and simpler to work on and service in my experience. Don't be tempted to buy anything second hand, you'll only finish up with someone else's problems and no guarantee. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Thanks for this, I'll try Tuesday. The more I dig I think I have a Volvo gearbox with the MD22L engine. The model number is MS 2LE and T Norris who supply Hurth boxes thing its a Volvo - but wern't sure and would like photos to confirm. also Volspec have suggested that it's likely a Volvo but again due to the BH weeknd have asked me to contact them again. Golden Arrow marine are not in today - back Tuesday
