Hi All

I changed the gearbox oil over the weekend. Boat is a Moody 35 with a Thornycroft T80 engine, with the Hurth gearbox. The manual doesn't say whether the oil level should be checked with the dipstick/filler bolt screwed in or resting on top. There is only one mark on the dipstick so am I correct in assuming that is a minimum mark, rather than a maximum mark? I would rather overfill than underfill, but of course do not want to do any damage.

As far as I can make out it is a mechanical gearbox, rather than a hydraulic one, and my thinking is that having more than the minimum level of oil will be helpful if anything as it will aid cooling.

But I'd like some reassurance I am not going to ruin it!

Thanks all
Martin

The dipstick must *not* be screwed back in, just kept on top of the hole. The mark you see at about half a cm from the end of the dipstick indicates the maximum level.
If your oil is just above the mark with the dipstick screwed in, the oil level might possibly be just correct?

For aditional info. the Hurth HBW100 gearbox has been replaced by the ZF10M - I know because I had to replace the Hurth behind my BMC1.8 recently.

The detail provided by Roberto looks to be spot-on.
