Hurricane Lamp?

Vapalux seconded, mine's stamped with the Gov: arrow and 1967. Can still buy new ones just up the road from where I was berthed when in the UK. Heats the cabin up too.

I just buy the cheap huricane lamps from the hardware store as backup, use them for a season or two and chuck them when they get tatty. Hardly vast expenditure and no worries if they get dropped or crushed in the locker.

How do you light them ?do you have to use meths to heat the mantle ?

Mine's got a circular cup round the vaporiser tube. Fill tank with paraffin. make sure valve is closed, pump brass handle a few times. Little squeezy bottle of meths, squirt some in bowl and light it. When it's virtually gone just open valve a little. Paraffin vapour under pressure goes up the tube and away you go. Gets very hot though and I usually have the main hatch open a little for ventilation. That's the basic drill.

I've got through quite a few hurricane lamps over the years. They all seemed to rust out after a while, even the Feurhand ones. Army surplus ones had a better design of burner so more windproof but I haven't seen any recently, Feurhand ones are available in larger sizes but I now tend to by the cheapo Chinese ones (Blackspur, Range etc.) a few at a time and then chuck them. They are awkward to light without tipping the glass sideways to get access and the burner always seems loose on the tank and the filler cap rusts in place (then can be filled by removing the burner!) but at about £5 each they are almost disposable items!

my dad used to use one Notice they were 60 w will get one as another option because they use paraffin and not quite as hot as the coleman (see above the one thing with cole4man is tho only needs a match to light you don't have to heat the mantle

yes has a mantel. pressure fed but has light control knob from about 100 w up to 200w had one for 15 years not one bit of trouble. also have a 2 sizes of (wick based) hurricane lamps

edit: only unleaded can go in it. not leaded . you can use colemans fuel

There's a place down in West Sussex that do lamps and spares for Vapalux, Tilley lamps etc: going back to the year dot. I can't do links or whatever, but it's called.. Base Camp. Might be worth a look if you can't find a lamp up your way Fergie.

All Vapalux parts are available from the factory. Somebody gave the link above, but you can just Google "Vapalux" and that'll get you straight there. The lanterns are very solidly made and pretty well soldier-proof (except there is no way of preventing a soldier putting petrol in a paraffin lamp if he wants to). Any Vapalux or Bialladin lantern, however old, can be refurbished with Vapalux spares. They are dead easy to light as long as you have a bottle of meths with a thin spout, the lighting cup has its wick in it, you can provide shelter from the wind while it is warming up, and you can wait 3 minutes for the meths to heat the vapourizer. If you can't wait 3 minutes you might get a ball of yellow flames, but that goes out as soon as you release the pressure valve. Lighting instructions are provided on the Vapalux web site.
