Any idea who makes the Hurricane A2E VHF and any contact details? I need to get it factory reset so I can input a new MMSI number but all the documents are 1000 miles away and Google isn't helping much.

The A2E Hurricane is just a re-branded Radio Ocean 4500, so I'd imagine any Navicom dealer might be able to handle your needs. Do you actually have to get it reset to input a new number? The MMSI input procedure is in the manual, but doesn't specify whether it will overwrite a previous number.

This is a rebranded something or other and seems to be a Navman 4500 on some markets which is the same stable as the 7100.

Might be worth a try doing this and substituting 4500 for the pin.

To reprogram the MMSI and ATIS numbers on a Navman 7100 do the following:-
Turn the set off
Whilst pressing and holding the Scan and Escape buttons
Turn on set
Enter the password 7 enter,1 enter, 0 enter, 0 enter
Follow the menu to clear the MMSI and/or the ATIS number
When cleared, Exit and turn off the set
To re-enter the MMSI and/or ATIS turn on the set and enter the numbers as
normal.

You can do this as many times as you like.

Does anyone know if it is written into the DSC specifications that the MMSI must only be 'dealer resettable' ?

More likely it is just 'proprietary opportunism ' for the benefit of franchised dealers.

Either way such locking down of purchased equipment is an outrage; it would be nice to see 'marine equipment unlocking' stands at boat jumbles, just like for mobile phones at every street market.:)

The Navman 4500 is a fishfinder! And the Navman 7100 bears no relation to the A2E Hurricane! Where do you get this stuff from?

I don't know, but if it was I wouldn't be amazed. A lot of the annoying restrictions (inability to adjust alert volume etc) are laid down there. I can just see that kind of bureaucratic mind fretting about people swapping MMSIs willy-nilly :)

Pete

Thanks for the input guys. So far, a rebranded Radio Ocean 4500 is looking favourite but I have just spoken to the UK Navicom agent, Mantsbrite, and they've never heard of it.

Any more ideas would be welcome.

You're saying they've never heard of a Radio Ocean 4500? Navicom market radios which are re-branded Radio Ocean products, which is why I thought a Navicom dealer might be able to help. Maybe you'll have to approach Radio Ocean. The UK distributors for Radio Ocean are Furuno (www.furuno.co.uk) and Force 4 (www.force4.co.uk). Radio Ocean is owned by Furuno.

Edit: Just noticed your radio may be in Spain; the Spanish distributor for Radio Ocean is Furuno Espana, Francisco Remiro 2-B, 28028 Madrid (www.furuno.es).

This is the Radio Ocean 4500, with your A2E Hurricane alongside...

OK lets try again........Same procedure as before but different buttons....

This is the Italian version I think !

Radio Ocean 4500 / Hurricane A2

What it seems to be saying is the starting with the radio switched off you turn it on
with the "watch" and "16" button pressed. It will ask for a pin so enter 4500.
Follow the menu.

It then will allow the MMSI to be over written after switching off and then back on
and following the normal instructions.

Could be worth a try.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. In the meantime I've been in touch with Global Marine who are the UK dealer for Furono who made the Radio Ocean 4500. Waiting for their "marine guy" to get back from holiday but I'll see where they point me.

They should have the info to press the two buttons for you and reset the MMSI for around 50 Squids:rolleyes:

Got an email back from Globe Marine, the Radio Ocean dealer, who tell me that RO don't re-brand anything so I'm none the wiser.

Must admit, the similarity is remarkable!

They're obviously identical radios. If Radio Ocean don't rebrand, then whoever made the 4500 for them obviously also sold it to A2E. I guess it'll be some Japanese or Chinese outfit.

Yep. I'll have a play with it but it looks like I'm going to have to write it off if I want to have the DSC facility :(
