Can anyone confirm what the recognised displacement figure is for a Hurley 24/70. I have seen the figure of 4,100 lbs quoted on two surveys and yet the PBO review of the boat last October quotes 5,040 lbs. Quite a difference, particularly for re-engining calcs.

Perhaps the 4,100 is the unladen hull?

Icant help with the figures, possibly the bilge keel version is lighter but I dont know for sure.

I had an early bilge keel 24/70 with a 15hp diesel .It was more than adequate making motorsailing into strong headwinds /rough seas quite possible .

I know other 24/70s get along ok on 10 hp.Due to the high freeboard I would not go less than 10hp or any headwind will slow you right down.

I have a 1973 Hurley (fin Keel Version), the surveyed displacement I have is 4100 lbs, with 2150Lbs ballast.

I also have a copy of the original manufacturers sales brochure which quotes 4200 lbs so you seem to be in the right area.

As far as re-engining go, mine has the original petter single 5.5 hp, so is very under-powered in my opinion, it's fine for calm water - no sea way etc, but really struggles against a tideway. But bearing in mind the engine is getting towards 30 years old it does ok.

I have a supplementary outboard bracket and when fitted with an 8hp outboard it performs well, although being a relatively high displacement the outboard takes time to bite- small prop high revs.

I think a 10 hp inboard with a right sized prop would be just fine.
