Hunting debate.....nb

Ahh - I mentioned fishing but actually I think, at the angling level, it is not the same. I would imagine that all the anglers in the world could not cause the damage of a few dozen trawlers who catch 'higher' species in their nets.

Anyway, fly fishing is an art, is it not?

Ah but the government wouldn't dream of touching fishing. Its the biggest part.. partis.....partak........too many voters do it. Recreational that is!

Can't help being cynical. General election soon - OurTone needs an easy vote winner, boy does he need it - pass a Bill that is an easy target that most Townies will support - who gives a stuff about the landed gentry who are all Tory voters anyway ? - and bingo ! - you've got a vote winner on your nice, clean, soft Townie hands. What are the Townies going to do when one of those foxy things that they've never seen in their natural, whips little Flopsy from his hutch in their nice suburban garden ?

tell me ... just how exactly, youse being ra expert and a', did you manage to leave half my fishing line on the bottom of loch melfort .. hmmm??!!

That probably comes from reading "The Little Mermaid" stories. What's it called - anthropomorphism?

Re: Democratic process

A fox killing chickens is one thing but you must equate it to a raid on the farmers bank balance/livelyhood. He's paid for the chickens, fed them, generally looked after them and then along comes Mr Fox and kills them ALL!!!
What would your feelings be towards someone that had just removed a load of money from your bank account that you had NO chance of getting back?

Dare I say it, I think you would probably want to Kill them.

Question.
a. What is the fox population in the UK?
b. How many are killed by hunting?

I don't know the answer?

I think you will find that it is a very low percentage.

A beautiful and eloquent argument. Though eloquence is it's only redeeming feature.

Lets take this back to basic arguments, and remove the veneer of large vocabulary.

The government have taken a decision, which some or even many appear to believe is flawed

What exactly is wrong with removing flies wings?

Re: Democratic process

In the context of farmer/chicken, I would think I had either not done enough to ensure the fox didn't get into the coop, or that I had been stupid in penning them so that they couldn't escape in the first place.

As to this argument and the numbers question you pose, that isn't really the issue. As some have already said, there are a number of farmers who don't support hunting. And it's not a numbers game. It's an issue of whether, as a society, we're prepared to accept that wanton cruelty has a part in our future, or wether it's beyond time that we moved on.

As to the freedom of the individual strain which keeps re-appearing - we are constantly restarined in our individual freedoms - I can't murder people for fun; I'm not supposed to steal their cars; I'm no longer allowed to bear bait or hare course; I'm not even allowed to be wantonly cruel to a pet I own. Tsk, tsk, and they call this a free country!

Re: Democratic process

Lived in the country have you? Luckily, as long as we're subject to ill-informed attitudes such as your own, we have reasonable grounds to protest. It's not about hunting. It's about ignorance leading to the suppression of livelihood, and emotive as it might sound, liberty too.

Re: Democratic process

erm . i'd be surprised if a single job is lost through banning hunting.. are you really trying to tell me that people will cease to own & use horses? Liberty is intertwined with responsibility .. specious arguments and statistics do not help any cause.

Re: Democratic process

Huntsmen, kennelmen? I don't hunt by the way, but I'm fed up of this government prioritising an issue that in the grand scheme of things, is highly unimportant. Listening to Claire Short droning on yesterday, I found her pathetic and am embarrassed that she is a representative of this country.

The decision wasn't taken by the government; it was parliament - big difference.

Actually (as I think I said), I agree (narrowly) that the decision was the wrong one but accept the majority vote of our elected representatives.

Generally, there's nothing wrong with killing pests but taking pleasure from killing or from wanton acts of cruelty against living creatures (I can't see where to draw the line between species) is ... an indulgence of the darker side of human nature which I think is better controlled than given free rein. It's a self-discipline thing, perhaps.

Re: Democratic process

Going round and round in circles here. This ban has nothing to do with animal cruelty. If it did have then the government should ban Halal slaughter or tax it to death., but then erm you can't upset a peace loving religion can you!
Its about winning votes and keeping backbenchers happy. The ones he's lost control of. So all in all I think you can argue, sorry debate, till the cows come home. Its a foregone conclusion!

Re: Democratic process

But surely the alternative is drag hunting where a scent is laid and followed, the only difference is that

1) there is no kill at the end
2) a proper "course" can be laid avoiding damage to crops & property.

Can't understand why following a laid trail instead of a fox will cause massive unemployment?
