And what's more - what'll happen to all the animal cracasses which farmers send to the kennels? they'll bury them in the fields rather than pay the knackersman, that's what and then all sorts of nasties will get into the watercourses. Mess with this one and there'll be a big hicup in countrylife, not to mention a huge them-and-us gulf in the Kingdom - s'pose I'll be told to call it "nation" next.
Argh! Pass the port - me gout's playin up again - on second thoughts, if I'm goin sailing, s'pose I'd better not . . .. . .

Hear, hear. I'm no hunter but resent the misuse of valuable parliamentary time on what has always been a matter of conscience for the individual. There's too many nasty class-ridden, town v country themes interwoven to make this a moral crusade.

I have no particular love of Hunting but this really is the thin edge of the wedge. I can easily see Fishing being the next target but the mass appeal of that sport will make it political dynamite.

Strikes me that every time these Liberal types smash another piece of our Country passtimes then itis another step nearer to our boaty pleasure being eroded & controlled out of existence. No, I dint think they'll ban boating but there will be so little freedom there will be no pleasure in it.

On another tack why shouldn't Scottish MP's vote on English freedoms. theyve already screwed up Tuition fees & many other things for us. Theyre just getting theyre revenge.

It's got nothing whatsoever to do with animal cruelty; if it were we would have the Scottish solution. It's more to do with the "unspeakable" element.

I'm sure that most folks thought the issue had been put to bed after the last failure; this latest attempt to rush it through more than smacks of sour grapes and bad use of scarce Parliamentary time.

What makes it doubly sad is that hunting is dying anway, there are fewer and fewer Hunts - especially the smaller ones.

In the longer term this rushed move can only damage peeps respect for the democratic process, regardless of the pros and cons if this specific issue.

Listening to Clair Ward waffling on about how this government were elected by people who wanted to see foxhunting banned. Weelllll, if it were truly the will of this government to stick to it's election promises, a damn sight more important issues, i.e. maintaining the quality of life in this country, would have been addressed before now.
Just to make it clear, this is not a ban on just hunting foxes, this is a total ban on hunting with dogs.
Incidentally, since the chamber was invaded by 6 protesters at around 4:25pm, the number of MP's in the chamber has now more than doubled.

Ah - your "vision". May I humbly suggest you take the trouble to go to a meet sometime this winter and see just what it's about. The huntsmen wear "pink", a few toffs and the smart set will probably be nicely kitted out in black and the rest will be in good ordinary countrywear. You'll be amazed at the characters you'll see and talk too and I trust impressed not only by the way everyone gets on but works and plays well together too - not to mention getting exercise and doing a useful job as well.

Sir Chay Blyth rides to hounds as often as he can.

We discussed it on Friday. He thinks the bills going to go through and that it will result in the deaths of many horses, that are no good for anything but hunting, many dogs, nobody's keeping hounds that can't hunt.

The funniest side of the whole thing is that foxes will be almost wiped out within a very short time. If they have no use they will be shot on sight. Lamping at night is the easiest way and many gamekeepers can actually call foxes to them to get them nice and close for the BANG.

Hunting is being used as a stick to beat a perceived class. Hitler banned hunting with dogs in Germany, the ban is still in place, because he thought the nobs enjoyed it too much. Labour think the same as Hitler, there's a turn up.

Country sports are a good source of income. It's about the only way woodlands/wetlands/moors etc can be made to pay their way. I opine that we probably wouldn't have any privately owned species rich habitats such as mixed woodland unless they had been traditionally used for gamekeeping and hunting for sport. The coutryside would just be a mix of arable, pasture and generic housing estates.

We should at least tip our hat to that tradition by allowing it to carry on as it has been for centuries.

The Lords chucked out the last Foxhunting Bill. How democratic are they? An elected body? Banning of hunting by dogs was on the last Labour manifesto and they won - that's democracy. I've not time for daft 'country ways' being somehow protected or otherwise above democracy. If the countryside, principally poor areas paid for by the wealthier cities, wishes to declare independence, then let it do so, as long as it can survive without subsidies generated by the cities. Whilst we're about it, let's let the countryside give us another BSE by keeping our city noses out of inhumane overcrowded cannibalistic treatment of animals too. Countryside Alliance? ...Make's I laff...

Excuses, 'vision' doesn't seem to be the correct word... 'mental image' perhaps a better one??? (as in visualise an image/picture or even a happening....). Hmmm.. your mention of pink dresses, worn by men doesn't really help... Are wigs still a clothing item these days or should I just shut up due to my limited knowledge aboot fox hunting? Still like foxy lady.. it's a great song!

oh, I forgot, hunting of rats and rabbits is exempt. All we have to do now is train the dogs to recognise the difference between a rabbit and a hare.
I know there is a difference in how they are hunted, just making a point, I think.
Incidentally Labour's favoured method of culling foxes is indeed by lamping, and using small arms.
Probably means that jumping a fence for a quick shag in a field on the way back from the pub, as a bit more of a hazardous pastime./forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

I 've lived in the country for most of my adult life, but I didn't really have a strong view on hunting until I saw a hunt. It took me two minutes to make my mind up. Bear-baiting, cock fighting, public executions have all gone; so should hunting.

I hope the barbaric "sport" gets banned.

Agreed, Mirelle.

Its taken thirty years of attempts to ban hunting with dogs for one of our legislators, finally, to admit on R4 this morning that the current bill is to strip the "the trappings of aristocracy from the countryside". He equated its importance with the removal of heredetary peers from the House of Lords.

If its legitimate to ban hunting because its a preserve of rich nobs how long will it be before boating is in the firing line?
