Hi all,

First post here so i hope i've put this in the correct place!

After a few years of sailing in dinghys a seal 22 and then a centaur i've decided to take the plunge and purchase my first yacht for myself and young family.

After much research and having had experience with the other yacht types previously mentioned i've decided on a Hunter Horizon 23 which suits budget and the type of sailing i'm expecting. There are a few on the market and i'm hoping to start viewing shortly. I'm aware of the main things to look for on a yacht i'm just wondering if anyone has any tips on issues to look out for on the Hunter Horizon 23 specifically (akin to the keel mechansim on the seal 22 or the keel bolts on a centaur!). Any other tips keenly accepted as well of course!

thanks!

For the most part they are fab little boats, great accomadation, good turn of speed and able to cope with decent passages. A good few years back we started out looking for a Horizon 23, ended up buying a much later 245 ....a few things to consider

1. The inboard / outbourd arrangement makes them tricky to handle in confined spaces as you can't push water over the rudder. By the time you are able to steer you are half way to somewhere you dont want to be! In addition, cockpit locker venting can be an issue depending on the motor.

2. Be very carefull of anything post late 1994 (I think they were designated 232 with modified keels by then) Hunter had some GRP material issues which led to wet hulls. Some were well repaired well, others less so!

3. The long windows can be prone to leaking. Kit built boats had countersunk screws into the GRP which were losened due to the expansion co efficient of the window being different to the hull. Can easily be fixed by screwing through the hull into a flange on the inside or using bolts / dome nuts. Many Hunters have carpet lined hulls which can develop mould problems once damp enters the saloon.
