Vsited the boat show this weekend and discovered this new (to me) concept of wrapping the hull in vinyl. There were a few pics on the stand and also their website has a few examples. http://www.wildboatwraps.co.uk/Case-Studies
The idea sounds like a good one to me. I was quoted a " ballpark" figure of £3.5k for a 43'. Not cheap but an interesting option.
It would be good to hear first hand if anyone has done this.

not a boat but I had a car wrapped a few years ago. great effect, kept it on for 2 years. all stayed on etc. difficult to get it off again.

I spoke to a guy who had it done, suggested it lasts 10 years!
Saves an awful lot of cleaning, when it does look shabby you remove it and unwrap a "new" looking boat.

I also had a chat.. dont forget they suggest some patches of tougher stuff for where the fenders hang so you dont abrade the vinyl wrap.
I was only looking at doing the hull stripe. I guess you could just do fender patches, but to do the whole stripe in the tough stuff was almost as much as the vinyl again. Gulp!

We got some prices to have a boat done and the general feeling from the people we asked to quote would be it would work but they wouldnt say for how long.

for race boats its popular as they are lifted in and out all the time and dont spend much time tied up to pontoons with fenders rubbing. all of the companies said that if there was any damage to the wrap (say a close encounter when berthing) and the intergrety of the wrap was damaged it would soon get water under the surface and come away.

Well that assumes you don't bother to repair it, and i'm told it's easily repairable, so why wouldn't you?

We wrapped a couple of 737's in a past life! Very hard wearing...and can be easily repaired. £3.5k seems a lot...thought it should be nearer £2.8k but does depend on quality of Vinyl..

I have just spent a week with a guy who had "wrapped" his white hulled yacht in dark blue. Very recent, so cannot comment on wear & tear, but I have to say it looked the bees knees. The detailing was pretty good as well.

One important point he made was that scratches can easily be repaired by a cover up patch which is virtually indetectable by the naked eye.

The yacht owner was mildly miffed that he had had to pay the full £'000 for the job - he is the father to the guy who runs Wild whatsits and had expected a sort of paternal discount - all those years of parental support, paying for college etc etc. Wishful thinking....

Are you suggesting a forum discount isnt on the cards?
Rum... very rum indeed.

Arnt the new prestiges done like that? Like what mbm have just got?
I have a friend that has just had his boat done this season the hull looks a bit like a targa so not all blue if you get what I mean just a thick band of blue.
His was done by a local sticker company who ordered in some special marine grade vinyl and got on with it.
Looks ok not perfect but that's due to some of the marks under the vinyl.
Will see how long it lasts can't really comment on how it's wearing as he is a sado & never uses it. It just sits on its birth been out twice this year !
It's was done for under a grand on a 28 foot boat.
And I'm sure there was a feature in practical boat owner a few months back about wrapping been the next big thing ( old man gets it now & again )

I think that was sort of stressed when I talked at show... any blemish in the gel will show through, unless sorted out. Not sure if that is in the quote, but I suspect not.

This could be a good test.
If it sits on a mooring 365 days it's going to have fenders rubbing 365 days.
If anything's going to mark the vinyl hull, this will.

IIRC I read recently that Sunseeker are wrapping their mullions on the new Predator in a carbon wrap.
I might be wrong but I'm positive they are using a wrap on their boat somewhere. Maybe someone else can confirm?

There again I might be wrong....:o
