Your opinions please chaps,to settle an argument:-is this a planning hull????

Looks so to me. Can you not photo it from underneath or turn the boat up side down. Then we can see it propper??

Ok cleaver clogs. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gifWell it still looks sort of plaining to me. But does look to have some sort of keel. So maybe semi planing.

As to the hull in question, mebbe planing, just launch the so####g thing and find out!;-))
 
Any hull of that basic shape will plane given enough power, whether or not it has a keel. The keel will give excessive lateral stability at speed (i.e. it might not turn). What you have to look at is the ride quality (given that it is a very shallow vee) and of course whether or not the moulding has the structural strength to withstand the additional pressures that a hull is under at speed. Looks like a nice little river potterer to me.
 
Must say I was a bit shocked by the picture of "her underside" if you get my drift

From an old MBY..

..it looks like a Sea Bird fishing boat, built by Wavey Rider Marine Ltd, ad says semi-displacement, probably with perkins 4108 or similar, so maybe 10knts flat out, removing the keel probably not a good idea, will plane with sufficent power but will slam a lot.
 
Photo deceptive the hole is only 3inches by 14inches and is only half repaired ,the hull can take a 150hp engine on outdrive so will need a big river/forums/images/icons/smile.gif.Iam only putting 75 hp into her for inshore fishing so don,t really mind about her planing,though prop cals say 22knots but won,t be getting this as have down graded the drive .mmm might be a techy post coming soon

hi thanks for the info wouldn,t mind a look at artical could you give more info on where i can get a copy, i havn,t removed the keel the repair is a hole cut in the bottom to accomadate a shaft drive by prievious owner see link below.

Unfortunately not an article just a small box ad with a picture, dimensions and price £2450+ vat and engine in Nov 1980.

So basically it was a shaft drive boat and has been converted to outdrive..........
Basically the hull shape would seem to fit with a planning one with a relatively flat deadrise at the stern and large chines making it relatively easy to get up on the plane but probably quite hard at speed in any sea.
Wonder why the conversion?

hi Duncan,
the boat was originaly an outdrive boat,but the prievous owner started to convert her to a shaft drive but stopped for whatever reason after he had cut the hole for the shaft and mounted the engine foward.I thought that adding a skeg would be next to impossible so remounted an outdrive configeration.

From the small picure in my old mag' it shows an outdrive but with a small keel, hence the semi-displacement description. The keel looks like it might have been where the long thin patch of glassfibre is in one of your photos, perhaps he removed it to fit a p-bracket or metal skeg rather than try to fit a bearing into the keel.
I would think the boat would benefit from refitting the keel if this is what has happened.

hi Chris,
couldn,t tell from original hole but there was no evidence of anything bieng there,the hull looked the same all through its length.The boat was advertised as a Colvic sports fisher,the next model in age to the Colvic seaworker22,as i intend to moor her on a drying mooring (soft sand) i would prefere not to fit a keel,...how long was it? depthwise.

a simple skeg at the back of the hull would be less than useless for any increased lateral stability and would be more likely to interfere with the smooth flow of water to the drive/prop than help at all - also a reason to tidy up the mess to a smooth finish. Small warning though is that at high speed that area of the hull will need to be the right shape as it is the main bit in contact - note the small 'flat pads' on many outboard/outdrive hulls between around 20 and 28 feet. However shouldn't matter with the engine you are proposing cos it's not going to be in the 40 knot arena is it!
You can always fit something on later if it proves critical anyway.

If you PM me your e-mail address I 'll see if I can scan the advert and send it to you, although now that I look closer there is a small difference to the angle of the wheel house side window. It might be that Wavey Rider used the Colvic moulds and or modified it slightly,I' ve got a few other early 70's mags so I'll have a quick look through for you.
