ah if only it was that simple

if you compare an '80s fairline with todays specs you will see what i mean - thicker isn't necessarily better and many hull failures can be atributed to aftermarket reinforcement or attachment removing their design flex

There's a book on GRP boat building by a chap called Hugo de Plessis (sp?) which has that sort of thing in it, but those are just recommendations. Also you should try one of the coding societies; Lloyds, or Norske Veritas.

Along with other replies you will find that thickness has changed with time. Reason?... in the 60's and 70's it wasn't known how long GRP lasted, so they made 'em thicker. Just take a look at an old Shetland and you will see what I mean - built like a brick out-house!!

It gets even more complex, because the design standards change over the years and are also dependent on the materiuals used e.g. raggie keel structure was a specific thickness and lots of lightweight boats built to that spec. One keel broke off so the design spec was increased, but nothing done to earlier boats. Major catastrophie when boat built to original spec lost its keel and inverted, with death of several people trapped in hull. Coroner called for reasons why boat not brought up to latest design spec which had increased thickness for a third time - but no recall or even system for re-call exists

I just cut through the hull of my American Rinker on Sunday, and it wasn't very thick/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif.
About 12mm.

Drilled a 38mm Hole for a Exhaust Skin fitting.
Its amazing how many times, We measured it, Check it and measured it Again, Before cutting it./forums/images/icons/crazy.gif
Lets just say i didn't enjoy ,that bit. And the boat was still in the water/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif
