I understand it is possible to get the hull gelcoat professionally polished and the results are very good. Can anyone recommend someone in our area who provides this service, and give an idea of cost for a 28ft boat?

I had a chap polish and antifoul my boat last year when I put it up for sale. I can't remember his name but I arranged it through Matthew at David Morris, Titchmarsh.

For a 28' boat, a good result should be obtainable without too much effort on one's own. I'm not an expert on buffing, though I have done my bit over the years. The main trick is to use a comfortable platform to work from.

Fill one impressive gouge in gel coat and several minor bits of "Lock Rash" then cut back and polish. £1200.00
Local Medway firm.

It is not difficult to get a good shine on a hull. My 32ft yacht takes me 2 days to compound and 3 coats of polish. You may find this presentation I made worth a look.

Nice guide and easy to read. I swear I recognise Concerto, I have seen her sailing in the Medway. Were you based at some point at MDL Chatham?
Yes, you would have seen her. After 11 years at Chatham, Concerto moved to Pwllheli, N Wales as I moved from Kent to Cheshire. That move resulted in catching a fishing marker off Salcombe and it sheared the P bracket. She has just had the repair completed, thankfully covered by insurance.
