Huh, still not purchased

I asked you knowledgeable fellowes/fellowesses(?) some time ago about boat chice between Sealine and Fairline open tops. Have decided that Targa is the way to go but wonder if I could seek some more input. I am slightly perplexed by the important differences between T37, 38, 39 and 40. Apart from the obvious price/engine/equipment differences is there much to consider between the various models with regards to reliability/seaworthiness/performance/build quality, i.e. the factors that only experience can reveal?

For example, I would love a T40 (170-180k) but see that the T39 may be a cheaper option...but how much different is it, apart from age. A T38 can be had for 100k but is it significantly worse than a T39? Are they all that similar? Nearly bought a 38 but dont like the Aqua hull.......

I appreciate this is all subjective but any input would be useful/appreciated.

Further, is there anything to be gained by going to the Southampton boat show with cash and a haggle in mind?

I've just sold a T39, lovely boat. We took her down to La Rochelle and back and never had any concern with sea worthiness et al. You are right to not buy Aqua hull - it's bad news on resale. I think the T39 is noticeably bigger than the T38, I think she might be slightly beamier but I'm not sure.

I've noticed that there is a T39 for sale at Port Solent at the moment - she's identical to the one we've just sold but she's a full price at £140k. Might trade at £133 - £135k maybe? There's another in Poole which again is pricey but I know she's overloaded with kit - a genny for example - I'm not sure why you'd want that on a Targa unless you've got air con. We managed ok for six months on board last year without a genny without any discomfort.

I have to say that I prefer the T39 to the new T40 because you've got the tender garage on the 40 that knackers the aft cockpit with just a sunpad on top of the garage. I suppose that's okay if you've got high demand for sun lounging space for totty - but regrettably that wasn't the case when I had a T (!) and I preferred the seating space for lounging with a beer. And can you ever imagine hanging on for grim death laying on the totty pad at 25kts!

The 39 is becoming more attractive I must admit, shame you have sold as I would like to have seen yours, may have saved some brokers fees.... Assuming what you say is correct regarding the size I assume they must have a different hull than the 38?

Yes I do think they have a different hull, though I wouldn't swear by it. It always seemed quite a bit larger to me.

I had mine advertised in MBY and on the web and had very little interest - and then when I placed her with Peters at Chichester at 15.00hrs one sunday in July she was then sold by 15.10 hours - and for that 10 mins I paid £7k brokers fee!

Shame, really. I have only just started looking at the larger boats as I had rested with the 37. If I had been into the larger boats I would have seen yours. Never mind, I appreciate your input. What did you replace her with?

I've gone over to sail (Nauticat). It's an experiment to be honest to see how we get on with it. I was thinking of changing to sail anyway but this red diesel debate pushed me to make the decision. I do believe that if we do have diesel at £5/gall from marina pumps two or three years from now that we will see a big drop in the value of high speed high fuel consumption boats. It's not the running costs that's the issue - an extra couple of thousand a year is not going to stop people - it's the potential drop in value of the capital asset that's the killer.

um, the "high season" is almost over, and with it comes a boat show soon, and hence quite a few s/hand boats.

I thought the t37 felt somehow bigger internally than the 39. The t39 is older, and inthe same way as the 37 is a 36 with bigger bathing platform, i think the same applies to the 39 - a 38 with biiger bathing platform.

t40 a whole load newer. i feel it's much smarter to have the dinghy out of tyhe way - altho on a t40 the dinghy is a bit weedy. However, thoughts such as these can lead you to buying very big boats indeed...

agree with robih - yoiu need a blue hull or a dirt cheap boat. You can make a green one blue - the gelcoat ground off and redone. A bloke with a screaming yellow sunseeker predator 58 got £100k off s/h - then decided the yellow. But the aqua is not okay, and most buyers will buy the worst blue hull before any of the gree hulled ones. I would guess hull, covers and seats £20k tops to turn blue/white from green/white.

IMHO Targa 39 with a white hull is the best compromise. Much bigger than a 37 and a lot cheaper than a 40. Not sure of performance with KAD42's, Would be a nice boat with KAD44's/300's. Of course there is also the Sunseeker Portofino 400, absolutely stunning, but under powered with KAD42's and more expensive with 370's on shafts (starting around £140000).
Given the choice I'd have the Sunseeker....and one day I will.

Having had a tender garage on the T48, I find them a bit of a pain in the proverbial. As you say, the size of the dinghy is restricted - dont know about the T40 but, as you know, the T48 garage was only big enough for a rubber hulled 2.85m Zodiac, not even a RIB. Then it was always a struggle to launch and recover the thing and the garage eats into cockpit space as well. Also, on some boats, the only engine access is through the dinghy garage floor which is a real pain
Much prefer the dighy sitting on the bathing platform and launched with the passarelle in seconds and no effort although, as you say, its untidy

I dont think the engine options (42's-44's) are too much of a concern for me, other than the Yamaha's (420STI) as I dont know much about them? I would happily go for a 38/39 white or blue hull with mooring on South coast if anybody is considering selling....I know that brokers have them but quite frankly I cannot stand car dealers so I assume brokers to be equally as annoying. I know they have to make a living etc...

Why do boats not sell privately? Do brokers offer warranties? Feel there is an opportunity for a self submit private sale only website....quite happy to host.

Why not nip down to Chichester Marina. Peters will probably have one of each for sale all next to each other. You'll be able to step from one to the other and get a real comparison of size and build quiality.

Yup, I have looked at all the websites, most of them mis-describe the boat, i.e white hull when actually green...wonder why they do that.

I am planning on trying to find a privately advertised boat if possible. Do both buyer and seller a favour.

The T38/39 relationship was the same as the T28/29 - same hull but latterly fitted with a bigger curvy bathing platform. Not been on a T37, so can't comment on them. T40 feels much more sexy, like tcm says, as it's all swoopy curves, but you do lose a shedload of space to the garage, as well as a shedload of cash to buy one.

Why do T37s appear to be good value s/h compared to othe boats in the range. I managed to get a broker down to £110K for a 97 and the only thing that stopped me buying it was the unfortunate realisation that I couldn't afford it (why does reality keep getting in the way)

The boat was absolutely immaculate.....must go buy a lottery ticket............

Currently running a White Hull Targa 40 - having had boats with davits and passarelles. It's a fantastic advantage to have dinghy tucked away in the garage - very quick and easy to launch and recover with the electric winch. As far as space is concerned there appears to be as much cockpit space as the Targa 37 etc. The Targa 40 with KAD44's has a good turn of speed and is an extremely good sea boat. So don't stint yourself - go for the 40..............

Matt- why the preference for blue hull? Surely it shows up all marks like salt and has to be cleaned more frequently to keep the good looks. I like the look, but.... Just curious, as blue hulls are only just beginning to make an appearance over here.
