Reading my copy of MBY this weekend, I came across the above article.

I fail to see the point of the article other than a few pages of editorial self indulgence? What did I learn that I couldn't have guessed or indeed didn't already know.

Did the Pred 68 really used more fuel than the car???? Never....!
Did the car really get caught in traffic???...surely not!

What a load of Self Indulgent Bullsiht.

Ramsgate to Chatham 20 August 2005

Cox and Haswell 33 - 28 gals diesel and 3 hours 15 mins pontoon to pontoon. Bounced around off the Foreland and boat covered in salt.

Navara - 2 gals diesel and 1 hour 10 mins car park to car park. Small hold up for bridge strengthening on A2.

It was meant to be an entertaining yarn about two great British products but it sounds like it didn't rock your boat. What would you like to see more of in the mag instead?
 
How about a boat test that is genuinely even handed giving praise where it's due and real critisism when something is wrong, rather than the usual "it's a great boat, and we are assured that the few problems there are are being addressed by the manufacturer" that all the boat test/reviews seem to be.

Or some more detailed descriptions of how a boat handles in anything other than flat calm - if it is flat calm on the test day surely there will be a day not too far away when it's rough!

The standard MBM/MBY boat tests are no real help when you are buying and trying to choose between one boat and another as they all reach the same wishy washy conclusion.

You could also ban any phrase telling us how a boat "breathes" or "hangs together".
 
An entertaining yarn certainly - tho not sure it helps with the case for retaining Red hm?

Perhaps for that you would need to compare energy used by the average mobo/yacht/caravan over their lifetimes and see how that turns out?
 
How about the cost of parking them?


When I was in Dartmouth recently Dart Marina charged me what I would expect to pay for a room in a country house B&B and that would incl. a full english and a daily paper to boot!

I hope kate paid her Harbour dues?
 
I enjoyed it very much, something a little different I thought, well done.
 
A bigger more comprehensive "NEW GEAR" section would be nice to see:

I've got to agree with Benny1 , more in depth review of boats that actually come across as objective. More criticism of manufacturers that after decades of experience still can't build boats that work properly.

Review of some of the bigger outboards 15-50hp rather than the ubiquitous 4-6hp.

What about a LNTM page that we see in PBO.

A suppliers directory for quick reference.

A better ratio of advertising to editorial. It seems that the magazine is bursting with adverts( a must for revenue I understand), ad getting shorter and shorter on editorial.... hence your recent "yarn".

Surely there must be huge amounts to write about and include in the marine world.

BTW the magazine change in Feb this year was a huge improvement, and you guys do do a great job..... so its not all crticism.
 
Got to agree, its the sort of thing usually reserved for the "Christmas Edition" or Clarkson on Top Gear.

Uninformative nonsense, not what I buy the magazine for.
 
And why were knocking the mag why must you always have a sweeping statement about a boat on the front cover then follow it by a question mark?
 
Well said. Clarkson already been there & done it with all the usual cliches. Also broke the boat and the support rib so not a bad story for Top Gear. Ho Hum, and 0/10 for originality. Not what I want to see in the mag either.
 
I thought it was a great article, great to see once and a while. The Magazines classy side came through, a good choice of car and boat, but then i maybe biased.

I too think this kind of stuff is a but juvenile, Clarkson gets away with it because he does it first and it works well on the telly.

If you must copy TG then give us more more boat reviews, and in particular shoot-outs where you compare different boats.
 
wow, what are you guys calling young these days?. Agree with more shoot-outs comparing different boats. e.g. P50, mahattan 50 and azimut 50. shoot out between 108 mangusta and 108 predator would make good reading.

Err anyone younger than 40 (40 being the new 50) is young in my books. Enjoy your youth whilst it lasts cos life don't half go quick.

Now Alex (young man), you've gotta admit that 108 mangusta v 108 predator would be a million times more interesting than the cliched boat v car. Next someobody will be comparing Honda F1 v Honda boat v Honda Bike. Doh somebodys already done that and gues what.... the boat lost. Yawn yawn.
 
Sorry to say but I totally agree. Totally pointless article.

Dissapointed to see some of the other stuff too. have we not had enough 5HP outbaord tests?

MBY is getting more like MBM every day. In fact what is the difference?
 
Pointless, but very readable. Handy for a bathroom-reading article. Not the sort of thing I want to see too often, but interesting, nonetheless.
