How valid is a survey

if you really like this boat get it re-surveyed else it could cost a great deal more than £900. If you haven't paid a deposit you could walk away - lots of boats for sale out there.

My point is I feel I should not pay £900 or so for a new survey to tell me what I already know or that the situation is worse

Then don't. No-one is making you do anything. There is no "should". You already know the boat is in need of repairs to the tune of 25% of its value, so revise your offer or walk away

Surveyors regularly get things totally wrong. One reason being that many are not surveyors - Just BSS inspectors who know almost nothing about boats apart from what is in the BSS book. Particularly annoying when the boat is not even on BW waters! The other reason is that they only have a few hours to inspect the boat and have to guess what their findings mean - often quite wrongly!
Speaking from experience of incompetent 'surveyors'.
