How to separate Avon two-part oars?

Hello,
Just that really. They don't want to come apart apparently.

I've just won a Redcrest that was going to be posted, but the seller has found that the oars won't separate which puts it in the'hard to post/very expensive' category.

Other than the oars it's quite a good buy, so I'd rather not cancel the sale
even though I'm entitled to.

Any tips for separating them?

The two parts have metal tubes which slide inside each other, and a spring-loaded button which emerges through a hole to lock them together. I'd guess it's simple corrosion. Heat, PlusGas, brute force, etc, might work.
 
use a socket that just fits inside after removing oar grip! a long bar and a lump hammer freed mine! Brutal but effective!The socket has to be a tightish fit so the socket rim fits the edge of the inserted part of the oar! Depress the sprung button and lever so it stays in. Best of luck about an hour should see you with freed oars!:encouragement:
 
Is it possible to remove the screw that attaches the metal sleeve to the wooden part of the oar? Not the ideal way, obviously, but it ought to do the job for now.
 
The later ones have plastic, which is much easier. I would probably use PlusGas first, but then, I use it to treat everything except measles.
 
I have broken two sets of these 2 piece oars just rowing slightly hard. They corrode quite badly and the holes form a weakness. Best of luck with it!
 
Depending on just how good the price was, you could always just have the dinghy delivered. Two-piece oars are not rare on ebay, or any boat jumble.

Mine are tapered plastic joints, with a spring loaded button. In the short term, just get the seller to take a screw out and remove the oar from the joint, as already suggested by Kelpie.
 
I'm with fredrussell.... leave the oars or do some cunning collection months later..... meanwhile it is the dinghy that matters. My Avon oars are inseparable :)
 
Thanks, I think I'll get the sale anulled as the seller didn't mention that the oars were stuck together. Given the postage problems caused by a 1.7m package (very hard to find a carrier who will take over 1.5m, and I'd costed it at ca £30 with split oars), it sounds like a gamble I don't need and it wasn't such an extreme bargain, just a good price so buying more oars will be not cost effective. There are plenty around.

If it was a case of nipping to the next town, I'd take a punt.

I haven't seen the oars, on the flesh, so can't quite picture this, but I'll see if the seller can/will try
