Wait on board and shoot the buggers……..
Thieves don't want to be caught. Thanks for all the suggestions. Think I'll try fitting security screws to the frame and get a padlock and wire. Ultimately, if they want it they'll get it but it should deter light-fingered opportunists.
Fair enough, but the load of a light sensing switch would be miliamps; it could run for a year without a battery needing a charge.Regarding lights/alarms/CCTV: I'm extremely reluctant to start drilling holes/running new cables around the boat. Also my battery power is limited and I don't want to put a constant load on them when I can be away for a few weeks at a time.

A cover over raft that is light proof.
A light sensing switch (plenty around) wired to a siren and deck lights that they can't reach... might make them swim away leaving everything and doing little damage.
Or one of those two-way SMS cctv things; it detects movement (so position it pointing at raft not the sea) sends you a text, you open it, link to the cctv and shout down the phone that you can see them and have called the police or whichever authority may actually render assistance. More costly than light sensing switch.
Magnet, really handy for a GRP unit. I suspect that you would soon get fed up with the battery alarm going off at weird times.Would something like this be useful in tracking down a stolen life raft?

A cordless disk cutter will detach a liferaft in seconds. If they want it, it'll be gone.

The problem with trackers ...
1. Where do you place the tracker so that thief doesn't just find it and throw it away ?
2. Very few actually have long battery life - I have many having tried to sort for lost models etc. The sales blurb often overstates run time of batterys.
3. If based on Mobile Phone .... most are 2G / GSM .... and if 3G / 4G - then battery life suffers even more.
I think everyone has discarded that idea as bolt cutters would make short work of the eyebolts and chainWe did eyebolts and chain.
I'd place the tracker in a roll of bandages in the First Aid Kit (How big are they?)
As far as battery life is concerned wouldn't they be "dead" until switched on remotely?
6-12 months
How long can a GPS tracker battery last? The battery life of the GPS tracker varies from one to another. But on average, a GPS device can also last up to 6-12 months without active tracking.

I know nothing about them but doesn't this indicate there are 4G models?
