How to remove oil seal?

Not on a boat but fairly boaty. Oil seal has failed between pump and motor on jet-washer. Having never replaced an oil seal before, how does it come out? Is there a proper way or do I grab it with a pair of pliers?

If the seal has a shaft through it you can't use pliers or levers.You can drill two thin holes on it and screw self taper screws in.Then you just pull it out with pliers

A small sharp screwdriver forced between the seal and its casing will give you leverage to pop it out.
The new one should just press in once you have oiled it and lined it up carefully. Sometines you can use a socket to press it in if you can slip it over the shaft or a piece of wood with a shaft sized holed drilled in it and use that as a press. Make sure it is lined up square before you apply any pressure.

Be careful not to scratch or otherwise damage the shaft as this will shorten the life of the new seal.

It might also be worth checking the shaft for smoothness and any 'lip' where the old seal was sitting before fitting the new.

Not having any luck levering the seal out - it won't budge. The pump casting is alloy and not standing up well to being levered against.
The spring that holds the seal lip shut has popped out, but do these seals have a steel frame inside the rubber? Not at all sure what to try next.

Surely the seal sits around the shaft and therefore is not "out of the way" when you a prising and levering?

The shaft (and motor) has been withdrawn from the pump housing. The seal remained behind - it is set inside the end of the pump. Imagine the seal inside the end of a pipe - that's the appearance.

Tap a small screwdriver in between the casing and seal, remove and tap in a bigger one, remove and try a bigger one still. You will eventually fold the seal outer casing inwards and the whole thing will loosen so you can pull it out

As I said above if you drill a hole on the seal,yes it's metal,and insert a selftapper or two it'll be very easy to pull it out.

Normally there is a thin steel ring around which the seal is moulded. All you have to do is apply a small screwdriver and hammer to chop at the perimeter of the seal, the steel is very thin anyway, and just "mullah" it up into the middle a bit and prise the wreckage out.
