How to remove diesel from rope

Somehow we have managed to allow some diesel to spill onto our spinnaker sheets (braid on braid) and I am trying to remove it and particularly the smell!
I have tried hand washing without much success.
I will not put them in the washing machine as the prospect of diesel-smelling clothes is dreadful.
Any suggestions?
Anyone done this?

Sounds like you've just obtained some new gash rope to be kept in a locker for the next decade and are about to buy some new spinnaker sheets.

Not at all, they are great sheets with many years of good life in them, but somehow some diesel must have leaked onto them from a spare canister.

Wash in warm soapy water or bung in the washing machine.

Wash in washing machine, then do cleansing wash of machine empty except for a few towels. If the towels smell repeat. We also do this machine dying clothes also except if white towels come out slightly the colour of the die we repeat.

Washing helps the rope by removing salt and grit, and machines are more thorough than your hands. For climbing ropes it is advised to put rope in pillow case but I dont know if that is truly needed

Tow them behind you for a couple of days, I sailed with a guy who believed that doing that made ropes softer as well as cleaner, I hated handling wet salty lines but he was the skipper.

I have washed lots of oil or diesel stained clothing, and nothing has made it appropriate to dump the washer

Buy some new rope; I've tried many times to stop rope stinking of diesel and feeling slightly oily and nothing works if it's been anything longer than a few hours.

there are many ways ,,,
swarfega and elbow grease followed by washing machine , ( loads of fairy liquid and washing power )
soak in " Gunk " followed by washing machine ( loads of fairy and washing powder )
soak overnight in hot water , loads of fairy liquid and washing powder followed by washing machine . ( loads of fairy an washing powder )

It does !! My are pretty old and quite green after a winter but a tow for a few hrs cleans them up really well..

just put in a tub of water with washing powder, agitate a wee bit and then leave to soak for a while then rinse with fresh water. No need to go any where near a washing machine. The smell will go if left outside for a bit.

Put in a bucket filed with a strong premixed solution of washing-up liquid and water.

Place bucket and rope into a launderette's washing machine.

Insert appropriate coins of the realm and set a long cleaning cycle.
