I have just acquied my first yacht (Halcyon 23) and want to change the name. Any tips on how to remove the old lettering. It is plastic lettering stuck on.

White spirit will remove most if not all sticky remnants and is a little safer and more pleasant than petrol-based fluids

[/ QUOTE ] Even safer and more pleasant is the citrus based "Sticky stuff remover" Sould be available from a decent hardware store. Well worth SWMBO keeping a bottle at home for removing the mess left behind by self adhesive labels etc.

One of those scrapers that use a Stanley Knife blade is great for lifting the lettering if you are using a hot air gun (on half power) I've just taken a vinyl name and trim strip off both sides of a boat that was painted without damaging the paint and left very little residue.

We have just renamed our boat and removed the old lettering using a hair dryer to soften the letters then peel off. The residue was removed with a US product called Goo Gone, which is excellent at removing all kinds of sticky crud.

Hot air gun taking care not to burn or melt the plastic lettering ... and a plastic blade ice scraper for car windows. No metal blades or knives ... you will make a score or two in the gel.
After - meths / white spirit / petrol etc. or even that sticky plaster remover stuff to remove the last gum residue.

I've just done my boats stern .. don't be surprised that letters have left "sun"marked lettering into the grp gel. I've compounded mine and still with light striking at an angle - you can see the lettering !!
