how to move a mast

How did you deal with the relative movement between the trailer and the mast as you went round corners, and up and down hills?

We had the mast wrapped in carpet at the touch points. The front end was prevented from moving but the rear end would slide back and forth.
We transported the mast from East end London to Cricklade, Glos.

But how about when you turned a corner. Did the mast bend as the trailer swung?

Borrow an open glider trailer from the local gliding club. they are around 10m long so with a couple of frames to support the mast you are in business.

Here's one I did earlier. The mast is 43ft and approx 80Kg

No. The mast simply cut the corner whilst the car and trailer went around it.

I extended the drawbar of my box trailer and moved a 18m mast from Cape Town to Johannesburg and then a 15m mast from Johannesburg to Durban including being stopped in a road block by the cops who only wanted to check lights and road tax

As you drive along you have this lance in front which sweeps a delayed great circle in front of you.

The biggest problem were mini roundabouts especially if there are any lamp posts near them.

The only time I was looked at was on the roundabout at the north of Perth coming off the bypass. A fat WPC in the passanger seat of a patrol car had a long stare as they crossed in front of us.

So you are saying the mast was supported at ONE point on the car and ONE point on the trailer, and the mast could articulate between the two, i.e could swivel at each mounting point?

I can see that working, just.

I has assumed it was fixed at two or more points on the car, then you can see my problem with what happens when the trailer goes round a corner.

How about putting the mast on the roof of a decent length car, with the maximum legal overhang at the front of the car. This will result in a long overhang behind the car which would be illegal, but probably less length of unsupported mast.

This reminds me of when, in my youth, I used to transport an 18 ft caramaran and it 25 ft mast on a roof-rack on my mini.

I don't know how it never came off and killed someone. One time I was stopped in traffic behind a routemaster bus. I realised that the front of the mast was actually projecting into the bus passenger platform!

go onto a local haulier,and get a price from them,ask for a quote as a part load, i used to be in transport, and we would put them in a trailer and tie them up into the roof,also there are several welsh hauliers who come to harwich,as some of them reload from harwich dock company, you can google for the number, and when you call them ask for the transport dept, tell them what you want, and as they are usually very helpful, they will give you the numbers of some welsh hauliers.good luck
