I am a complete novice to the world of boating. I live in West London and would love keep a small motor boat on the water for sunny day cruises. What am I allowed to tie up to? Another boat with owners permission? A buoy? Am I just dreaming as I don't see any small motor boats enjoying the Thames in London.
Cheers.

That is a bit small, and yes you don't see many as there are limited places to tie up and places to go. You could ask the peirmaster in the barge at Imperial Wharf but it won't be cheap.
I suspect your best option would be to speak to one of the barge owners just above Chelsea bridge and see if they would let you moor outside them.

Mind I wouldn't want to be out in central London in a 10 footer when all the trip boats are charging up and down.

Any chance of:-
Sticking it on a trailer
Get a towbar for you car - if you have one
tow it to a public slip
Only do all that on the non tidal bit
Keep the former in a lockup when not in use

Seriously dude, what you propose is a bit like taking a Moped on the M1.

Why on EARTH would you want to take a ten footer down that part of the Thames? :disgust:

Take it to the public slipway at Windsor, and you can cruise up and down to your hearts content, with plenty to see and places to stop and chill.

You are suggesting people want to tell you how to be really really pointless. I don't think thats going to happen...Sorry!

A 10ft motor boat is an interesting description. I think a dinghy would get swamped anywhere down from Houses of P

Canoes are OK but a motor boat implies dinghy ??
I don't think the PLA would be too happy about an unescorted Canoe between Westminster and Tower Bridge :) .
Personally I think the poster just plucked a size out of the air. Had he said a 13'6" Dory no one would have made adverse comment.

I've just bought one of these and am currently registering her for the Thames and other places. (but wouldn't use it anywhere near London):

My point being you could take it home / anywhere you like rather than trying to find a mooring.

Yummy! - great fun and a lot of experience in tacking....

Poor OP, in all innocence he popped a question on here and has met with a lot of negatives.

"we experienced boaters" know the problems - but he sees a bit of water with boats plying up and down; naturally wants a bit of the action.

The Tideay is a nightmare, but you're not aware of it until you've had your car waterlogged / "stepped foot on it".

People are so disconnected form their environment nowadays, especially if you live in a vast city like London, that it's not unusual that they "haven't a clue"..

Be gentle folks and perhaps he'll get a pram dinghy and potter on the Lee at the East or the NTT at the west.

But are you saying that with no sails on it and a little outboard , you'd be happy taking into the pool of London ?

Because I wouldn't.

I've been through the pool in a 7 ft dinghy with a 3.5hp outboard with Richard Shead , many many moons ago and it was terrifying. No fun at all.

Without Richard Shead it would have been OK?
