How to introduce your partner to sailing?

[ QUOTE ]

Di loves sailing, and particularly likes it when the boat heels.

Same here. She is not that interested in sailing as such, but likes being out on the sea. She especially likes windy days with plenty of waves. She usually stretches out on the leeward cockpit seat and snoozes. Hard on the wind it doesnt do too much for the balance of the boat, but she is totally relaxed. It works for me because those days are the days when I am least likely to be out on my own for long. It just feels more comfortable to have someone else out there.

I remember one argument we had on virtually wind less evening which was brought on because it was so dull and she was totally bored. I was, of course, happy tweaking the sheets, etc trying to get the gps to show .1 knot more. She wasnt. Now I check the wind for minimum wind speed, rather than the max, before suggesting sailing.

Re: How sad

I took my wife out in my mates Kestrel dinghy across the Gareloch in gusty winds with the full rig up. Needless to say we capsised when we went about and she looked stunned. I told her to hold on while I righted the boat and as it came up she stayed in it as I had hoped. I thought at the time that this is a kill or cure moment. When we got back across the loch she said "that was interesting" and I knew I would be ok getting a cruiser. The fact that the kids thought sailing was brilliant helped somewhat.

Buy the right boat. Until we bought the Halcyon 27 she would not touch the helm with the sail up, now you try get it of her.
Not sure if it is a good or bad point at the moment.

have to agree with the OP. Sue is now a handy 1st mate and decent helm in addition to all the things I fell in love with 20 odd years ago. The slow introduction to the rougher elements was worth it.

When we bought our own boat, a Bav 34, I encouraged him to buy it as I knew it was his dream.

Can I introduce you to my Wife? We have the one day a year visit but it is the idea of buying a biigger boat I like best!

[/ QUOTE ]But then, just 7 months after buying the Bav, I started informing him that we needed to get a catamaran (which cost more, of course). So in the end we had some kind of a compromise - my sort of boat, less exciting to sail, but his overall hobby. He says that he'd rather sail on a less exciting boat and have me with him than have an exciting boat and me stay at home - but some keen racer chappies wouldn't want to make that sacrifice, I imagine.

Be careful for what you wish for - you might get it. Biggest mistake I ever made. She hogged the helm for the next twenty years. Others enjoyed their sailing then went home to the joys of home and hearth.
