Friday early evening the tide is taking you west. Wind overnight is forecast fairly benign and NNW. Maybe anchor off the beach on the east side of hurst spit and watch the madness the following morning?

My first ever trip as the only bloke on board who was expected to know what he was doing was RTI day, a fact that I was aware of, but had no idea of the implications. We went out and looked at a US aircraft carrier parked in the Solent, did a couple of laps of it then wandered off East, to the the RTI pack coming straight for me, on starboard, with me on port. Scary!
Last year I went out from Portsmouth and anchored off Seaview, a couple of hundred yards from the first mark that tries to make sure no one ends up parked on Ryde Sands. That was great - a perfect place to watch the world and his crew blatting past.

they dont need a slow MAB in their way
Well, the other competitors will certainly have my slow MAB in their way if I'm the stand on boat, but then I've been daft enough to enter.

Good for you! I am sure that a quality MAB will do just fine. One day I plan to as well but I dont think I am experenced enough AND my MAB is not up to the offshore regulations.
Looking at the tides etc, we have decided to go to Gosport on Friday afternoon and back to Swanwick on Saturday. I am expecting that by staying to the North channel area, we should be out of everyones way.
I guess the marina will be a bit noisy etc first thing but I can put up with that. I'm going to have a couple of my boys with me, so we will eat onboard and they dont care much for pubs.
If you do see us plodding along, give us a wave and we will take your photo!

Lots of boats will be leaving Portsmouth at horrid-AM, probably making some noise, so try to get a quiet berth that a resident has vacated, rather than the visitors pontoon. Many people who keep their boats on swingers pick up crew from the marinas in the morning. It should be nice and not too fraught watching the fleet go by from around Spit Bank Fort or further East, it could be a bit busy getting back to your berth.
The worst bit is the pre-start off Cowes, avoid that IMHO!

I'm going to East Head in Chi Harbour with about 100+ kids in dinghies. Sorry if anyone is contemplating hiding there......
