Can anybody give me some advice on Anchoring in the Med? I have just purchased a Bayliner 3258 in Italy (very good prices over there at the moment! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif ) and i have been told by the locals that a second anchor should be used at the stern - only thing is, i don't know what size is best? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Not sure why the locals have advised you to get a stern anchor as a second anchor other than as the obvious safety device and the ability to do so when required/necessary.

The confusing point in your post is that it is 'normal' to have a kedge anchor out whenever at anchor. This is definitely incorrect in most of the Med - although I could never claim to know Italy 'well'. Many Med moorings get rather busy in the summer and the thought of a Brit being the only boat with a kedge out on a blustery Summer day in a crowded mooring smacks more of a local wind-up !

DavidJ and several others will no doubt advise on particular Italian 'quirks'.

You already have a good link to secondary anchor sizing -

Agree with Learner, strange advice. Also wispers' JimmyGreen site is useful, I've not come across that one before.
During the day the wind could change several times and with a kedge out you not only don't go in the direction of the other boats but you could end up sideways on which is not the best. The best advice that I have gleened from this forum and personal experience/failings is to have a good size anchor (15Kg for your boat, even though they have probably fitted a 10Kg) , look for a patch with no weed and put out as much chain as the swinging safely will permit.(5x depth and more if poss)
The only place that I've come across kedge anchoring or ropes tied from the stern to cliffs is Yugoslavia and I'm not totally sure why.
hope this helps and welcome to the forum.

ps. There is a post of mine on anchors on page 3 or 4 by now with a title something like 'Can I fit a larger anchor to a Sealine S37' Some amazing well informed replies including some from the inventor of the 'spade' anchor.
