1. Deliberate on essential must-have spec for replacement boat
2. Spend months carrying out exhaustive study of all likely new and secondhand candidates meeting spec
3. Shortlist model types worthy of further consideration
4. Trawl through all brokerage websites on regular basis requesting details of all boats on model shortlist
5. Analyze all technical and financial details of specific boats under consideration on massive spreadsheet
6. Inspect most likely candidates, taking photos for reference and making copious notes
7. Ignore 1 through 6, make offer on boat you've never seen on basis of a couple of grainy digi photos, which has both engines in bits thanks to major warranty repairs and according to resident forum Trinny/Susannah type style guru, tcm, has wrong hull colour, wrong interior woodwork type and wrong worktop colour and, therefore, will never resell. Oh yes, its in the wrong place as well

Oh shit

Word on the street this evening guv is you have bort a '97 Targa 48 white hull in Cala d'Or. And you haven't even seen it, a mate saw it armed with TCM's checklist!

Fab stuff. That's the way to buy it!! Hope all goes well. Where you gonna keep her? What engines?

Serious point: will you tell me if the surname of the seller is Ridley?

Nope, only Ridley I know comes in pint glasses on the TV with Newton. Seller is Peters, B A to his mates and yes, I did get a local skipper friend of a friend to take a look at her and, yes, tcm's posts have been v useful. She's been German owned which is good news and p/xed recently. Engines are Cat 3216's which have undergone some serious warranty work recently. Sounds worrying but repairs are warranted
Going to keep her in Cala d'Or for a couple of months whilst the inevitable probs are dealt with and then move her to Cote d'Azur around end Feb. Looks like tcm may be able to help with berthing as well

Way to go Mike. And no spreadsheets. Any chance you can give "someone else hereabouts" some lessons on how to buy a proper boat then?

Rubbish

1. Deliberate on essential must-have spec for replacement boat
Replacing what? Knowing must have spec , comes after step 7.
2. Spend months carrying out exhaustive study of all likely new and secondhand candidates meeting spec
Months? Try years..discounted new very early as KNOW first one will be changed
3. Shortlist model types worthy of further consideration
..and change mind several times
4. Trawl through all brokerage websites on regular basis requesting details of all boats on model shortlist
oops, recognise that stage very well .. you also miss out KNOWINg every boat in every marina in SoFrance >20<50 feet.
5. Analyze all technical and financial details of specific boats under consideration on massive spreadsheet
strange thing is I wonly did that once at request of Cuty Squalid
6. Inspect most likely candidates, taking photos for reference and making copious notes
Notes...that's boring...just don't do notes
Oh yes, its in the wrong place as well
...and wrong model in my case !!

Paranoid Learner

No need to get offensive. Did I mention you? What makes you think this was aimed at you then? Getting a bit paranoid I think? Maybe worried about losing a bet eh?

Oh, for gods sake just ignore him....he's like a bloody virus.....alf a chance and he's in there like my little terrier snarling and bashing away but making no real impact on the problem......
Lets face it, I said it before and I'll say it again....the only way Learner's going to get a boat is if we buy him one......
....just to remind you this one seems suitable on all counts.........

I bet it will be great. I never had a sea trial before buying t48 , nor leopard, nor a drive before buying quite few cars, so I think this approach works very well.

Re: congrats

Mike

Well done, hope you enjoy.

Only thing I would say is re Cat3216s
Have a good look at boatdiesel.com, I seem to remember it saying there was aproblem with them and lots needed repair/replace.
Unfortunately, Pauljs_eng doesn't seem to be about recently, he might give more info.
Suggest you could try and get an independent opinion on th engine probs and repair rather than just trust <<repairs are warranted>>

Re: congrats

Had a look at the website, Anthony and there's not much about Cat 3126 probs although maybe I'm missing something. I recognise I'm taking a risk buying this boat with engines having undergone major warrantysurgery but it does mean I get a 6 month warranty on the engines which I otherwise would'nt have got had I bought a secondhand boat that had'nt had any probs. Sods law dictates anyway that, if any engine is going to go bang, its going to do it just after you've handed the cheque over

Re: triple ace

Can provide pre-production ones.... just name when you'd want them --- 25% up front and I'll arrange....... oh.. will be 250's or 375's as they move up 125hp for each rotor you're adding....

Sure you don't want surface drives.......
