I was looking at a Westerly Centaur which although looks good on the outside, I feel however it is still over priced after a recent reduction. I have not given the asking price on my post as don't want to influence peoples opinions but I would appreciate any suggestions as to what my offer should be.

Year Built 1978 ish
Hull original gel coat in good condition with smooth underwater area
Superstructure gel coat OK but some blisters near the wood gunwale
Engine Original Volvo MDIIc direct seawater cooled.
Engine Hours 1200 (but could be more if unit had stopped working)
Standing rigging renewed last few years
Running rigging as above
Newish Spray Dodger
Newish Sail Cover
Forward cabin has no roof or cabin lining and poorly painted with traces of old foam.
Berth cushions OK (but a bit of a hideous pattern)
Main cabin has new non vinyl roof lining rest of side OK
Fairly old cooker but serviceable
Mainsail and Genoa old (original) but serviceable.
Electronics, Echo sounder not working, no tiller pilot, compass.

Boat is very tidy but a bit smelly inside from leaks in the fuel system. I quite like the boat but a 36 year old Volvo MDIIc engine does worry me having had a MD2B in the past

What would you offer?

Engine and sails are big ticket items. So are electrics/instruments. So my guess would be in the £6k region?

I wouldn't buy it with that engine although I have seen them up for sale for around 10k. Find one in as good condition with a replacement engine otherwise it could end up costing you a lot more. Don't ask how I know!

That sounds like a project boat. Virtually worthless. Too many people playing on the Westerly name and hoping too much on prices. Its an old smelly boat. £1000 seems about right.

but the engine is going to need replacing at some stage

and as Tam Linn says - that could be a lot of money

I would love to see Tam Linns real world costs of the new engine - including wires, tanks, filters, gearbox etc.

don't suppose there'd be much left out of £9000

Pre the fiscal difficulties Centaurs generally used to hover between 10 and 14 thousand. Good ones might now fetch 8, or even more if exceptional. Needing work, less.

One sold up the road from me for 3k, but that was a bargain. You cannot price a local, operational, boat on the strength of one, as seen as lies, fire sale, a long way from home.

D Winter went to a lot of trouble, and had the night watch out, looking for a cheap boat. It was not easy and he was willing to take one without an engine.

So, my complete guess is that the boat started at 7k dropped to 6 and you want to offer 5. It might be a bit much, too much if the engine is wobbly and certainly if there is doubt about the keels. If it is a lot less than this, you are in clover.

I put a 20hp Beta in about five years ago for under 5 thousand. However I did all the work myself and reused everything except the propshaft, stern gear, beds, inlet cock, technodrive and a few bit and pieces.

Asking price for this boat when first up for sale was about £12k and has dropped over last year down through £10k to £8k but still very overpriced as it is a very basic boat with no goodies and an old Volvo which is of unknown condition. If I was to take it further, My offer would be £6k max subject to the engine starting perhaps even with a retention of £1k payable after sea trial on engine operation.

The decision should not be based on the selling price, but on the total amount you are prepared to spend to get the boat how you want. Cost up the work you plan to do, subtract that from your budget and that gives you the buying price.

and I would suggest that is being generous - I was thinking more in the region of £400~£500 tops. You could easily spend £10,000 on it to bring it up to a reasonable standard and do not forget the keels issue - ££££'s

I wouldn't buy a Centaur with a Volvo engine now.

5 years ago I bought a late one with good sails, good upholstery, reasonable sprayhood/dodgers/sail cover and MD11C engine.

The sails are now well into their life, everything else is tired, except the upholstery.

The engine still does OK but I wouldn't say it's worry free, but it's not worth replacing the engine in a boat that should never sell for >£8000.

A top notch one with a brand new engine and everything else new and to your liking won't exist, if it did it may be worth £10,000.

My thoughts exactly. Bad interior, suspect engine, electrics not working and original sails. Walk away, there's nothing there worth £6K

There's a Nic 26 on Ebay for £7K, now that might be worth a cheeky offer! :encouragement:

You should simply offer what you think it's worth to you. I don't see how anyone else's opinion matters.
I would offer nothing, but that is only because I don't want one. It doesn't mean the boat is worthless.

It does matter, because unless he has a desperate desire for that particular Centaur, he can get a range of opinions on what Centaurs in general are worth and on what the financial pitfalls might be in buying this one. He can't tell what it's worth to him without knowing how much other ways of acquiring a Centaur would cost him.
