Ok, it seems from the earlier "what boat do you liveaboard" thread that hardly anyone has an AWB (Average white boat), or indeed a "newer" design slamming camper...

Many who want the "dream" should find that very imformative.

As a suffix, info that many would find imformative (And understandable if you dont want to publish this info), is apx cost when bought and what the refit(s) have cost to get it to the liveaboard state YOU want.

I´ll take the plunge....

Seastream 34 ketch 1978, purchased 2004, asking 49950, paid 36k gbp.
Refit prior to sailing... apx 20k.. new sails - main mizzen genny staysail and Miz staysila, storm sails, masts recon and rewire, loads of spares, new rigging running and standing, mast steps, trisail track.. new anchors, 10mm chain, dinghy, outboard, full heavy current rewire, new 800ah batteries - trojan, chartplotter, paper charts, and MUCH more

refit 2006 / 2007 inc 60 lph Schenker watermaker, hydrovane, RM autopilot, eberspacher, electric winches, revise interior layout, new rib and 18hp outboard, etc etc, 20k ish...

so around 76k for a 1978 boat...

I could have bought a Bavaria !! damn...

On a more serious note, the info I am asking for is what I would have loved to have seen published when WE were looking.

Dunno. Haven't finished yet!!! After just about 10 years, a lot of the re-fitted stuff needs, well, refitting. Shudder to think about it.

The short answer is it costs whatever you are prepared to aford, at some piont you say 'sod it' and go as a boat is never finished.

In my case over 4 years
Classic 35ft wooden boat hull in very good condition but minus just about everything everything exept mast and sails which had been stored ashore!! £19K
Stage 1 - Step mast, running rigging, instruments and other essentials to get boat mobile. Approx £7K
Stage 2 - New electrics, engine, tanks, ground takle, autopilots etc to bring systems up to date plus and some mods to rigging to tune it up. Approx £12K
Stage 3 - 'Domestics' heating lighting hot water systems plus complete refit of main cabin furnature and improvement to other two, Approx £7K
Probably add another 4K for incidentals, cranage, yard fees etc recon the total is around £45K but I havent kept detailed records and anyway its always difficult to knoww what to put in, berthing fees and antifoul for example, are these refit costs or maintainace? These are higher because you need good access. Also its very difficult to live aboard when doing a major refit so half way through I bought a house!!!!

In conclusion Ithink I was about right in my origional plan for £40-50K but the expected 2 years in time is now 4 and will be nearer 5 by next summer when its all finally finished so you do need to enjoy doing it. As far as cost go a comparisson would be with something like a halsburg rassey, island packet etc not bavaria so you have to compare like with like. I probably did save a bit against buying a similar S/H boat that was ready to sail and just making changes for ofshore sailing but more importantly doing it this way meens all the systems and accommodation are not only just what I want but also brand new. All depends on what you want to do, how much time you have and what DIY skills you have.

We bought a 50' 1977 ketch, supposedly with redone decks under that non-skid--not caught by surveyor--for app. 38k gbp (I'm doing the conversions for you with today's value dollars to gbp), which was app 10k too much, considering that's about what we paid to have the decks actually redone. Two surveyors (an honest surveyor?) and/or an honest seller would have been helpful--but one pitfall of buying a boat in another country.

In the last four years, we've added new everything. Literally. And more mod cons than we would need if we (read "I") were younger. At a boat show two years ago, we saw a comparable boat with a similar design--50' pilothouse--similar mod cons, similar everything except age. It was selling for 1.2 million dollars--app. 577k gbp. I promise you, we haven't come CLOSE to that figure!!! Frankly, it made me feel much better.

So, no new boat. Instead, an old, heavy, sea-loving boat that's done to our taste and that keeps us very cozy. And, if one thinks about it from the perspective of that new boat, over a million dollars in our pocket!

Still 6-7 years before we push off.
Refitting as money becomes available - had everything costed tho

Upgrade electronics (done)
Rewire & upgrade electrics (halfway through)
Replace deck & Awlgrip hull (winter 2008)
Replace rigging & sails (winter 2009)
Re-engine (current original Vetus to be replaced by Yanmar) & re-prop (spring 2011)
Fit essential "blue water" stuff (SSB, Hydrovane & solars) (spring 2012)
Trials to iron out last minute niggles (2013)

How? Did you not have survey, or were you carried away and ignored the result?

Curious as we had seen a couple of these on the market and were interested.

Liveaboard - following the sun!
www.freewebs.com
We are setting off in July, spend so far (and expected pre-departure spend):

Hydrovane £3.5k
New refridgeration £0.8k
New Prop £1k
Anchor Windlass £1k
New ground tackle £0.5k
SSB £1k
Chartplotter / Radar £1.5k
Charts / Pilot Books / Chart plotter cartridges £1k
Safety Equipment (Life raft service, flares etc) £0.5k
Electrical upgrade (semi-rewire, new switches, battery monitor, alternator, split charger) £0.5k
Wind genny overhaul and solar panels £0.5k

This lot comes to £11.8k. I expect at least another £1k of sundry items before we leave

£14k wouldn't be too far wide of the mark (20% of purchase price which is what we aimed at!)

Nicholson 38-1970-Asking £42.K, paid £36.K. Old equip't on board so ditched the lot as I intend permanent live-aboard & long-distance cruising for the next 10-15 years. Current re-furb has now cost me another £60.K professionally, involving new Volvo D2-40HP, new Selden roller-furling Genoa, 1000+ AHr Lifelines custom build-in, new Raymarine C120 kit & Radar,, Icom VHF, bilge-pumps, new D4 Eberspacher & 5 outlets, etc, etc, & a lot of fixing up all at yard-rates of course. Not finished yet as need new outboard, Dinghy, & Liferaft, also SSB later maybe.
Ridiculous amount of money I know, but my own workmanship is not that good, & I want this work to be of the highest quality, when I'm out there-on my way to Cape Town, wherever.!
I also just couldn't take the time to do a lot of this work, it would take me years to do, with questionable workmanship as well, so I just have to cough-up & look happy.!
Trouble is, it's wiping out my cruising budget now so, what-the hell, back to work for a bit longer.! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Cheers...

Originally wanted something newer but couldnt get what I wanted for the ''right money'' spent 18 months wandering around yards and websites looking for my ideal boat.

Wish list was pretty basic, deck saloon, ketch rig, long keel in need of updating but hull/mechanicals in goodish condition.

Not sure financially how much Ive spent refurbishing the old wreck but I spent nine months under a tarpaulin welding plates, fairing the hull and painting. Thats every evening, christmas day, new years day and every spare minute either planning or doing.

Once the outside was solid I then spent the next 3 months rebuilding the inside which was torn out to carry out the welding, the highlight was not working under a bl**dy tarpaulin
The insides still not finished 2 years later but I HAD to get afloat or I was going to go insane and end up like some of the others in the yard !!
big bushy beard, haggered look, hundred yard stare, torn shirt, filthy trousers and an alcoholic..... living in the wreck of their dreams under a bl**dy tarpaulin [shudders]

Will someday make the effort to finish the interior.... someday

If I had to estimate the money I spent on materials I would say around £8000 that includes all upholstery below and me making up all new roof linings, fitting new electronics, new galley and a partial rewire.
if I had to account for my time at say a yard rate of £25.00 per hour then someone out there owes me a fortune AND I WANT PAYING !!
Would I do it again ? thats a resounding YES Ive ended up with what I wanted at a price I could afford, now need to get the money uptogether to use the boat to her full potential by which time it will need another refit...... doh /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

1988 Oyster 406, bought in 1995 winter, she'd been sailed (motored?) back from Australia and wasn't in good condition. Cost £97k.

Professional work: Engine out, top end re-furb, new alternator, new gearbox; re-wire 12v system with added battery capacity, smart regulator, smart charger, solar panel. New forestay and backstay.

DIY: new running rigging, rebuild in mast furling, rebuild jib furling, re-seam teak deck. Replace most electric pumps (water, waste, bilge), anchor winch, autopilot actuator, water accumulator, dinghy and outboard. Rebuild all manual pumps. Lots of nitty gritty inventory replacement and addtions and other stuff.

Cost over two winters to restore and improve original fit to my needs: £23k. In addition, about £3k pa for on-going cost of maintaining value - sinking fund for replacement and annual repairs; of engine, sails, further standing rigging, batteries, liferafts, autopilot, etc etc (excludes consumables).

So, summary: value added after purchase brought boat cost up from £97k to £120k, then £3k pa was spent maintaining that level. Boat was sold 10 years later in very good order for for £97.5k. Total capital depreciation £5k pa or 5% excluding inflation, about 7.5% with inflation.

When I was living aboard my Bav I didn't have time to frequent forums so maybe all the awb's are on passage? being an advocate of the devil.

Re-fit? It took 7 days to alter the boat for codeing and add all that was needed for safe ocean cruising, less than £5k.

Towed generator, inner forestay, storm jib, ssb receiver and half a dozen extra D rings for harness attachment. Fitted cushions for the cockpit were the best improvement.

This was a 1991 Bav, purchased for £68k sold for £70k two years later.

1920's ex-Naval Pinnace purchased 2006 - £5500
26' butt of larch - £1500
Green Oak - £800
Marine ply - £2000
Toys (saw bench, router, etc) - £1200

Probably another grand to spend on wood and that will finish the outside and then I'll cost the interior.

Bought boat for 72 (asking 90). 43 foot (50 with bowsprit etc) long keel cutter.

Refit for about 20, major items being:
Twin poles, tracks etc and second jib - 4
Radar, chartplotter, speed, depth, wind, repeaters - 4
Liferaft - 2
Lift out, antifoul, varnish work - 1
Refrigeration - 1
Laptop, pactor modem - 1
Batteries and associated stuff - 1
Anchor, mooring lines, lifelines - 1
And plenty of the £100-200 stuff adding another 5 probably

All work done by me except fitting the twin tracks / poles.

Aim was to have a boat ready to go for under 100 and we've done that which I'm pleased about. Still plenty of work to do en-route (biggest job is a holding tank) but so far so good.

Quick reply is

I sent a deposit and had a survey. No one will ever convince me that he didn't give the surveyor a back hander. The surveyor could only find 3! keel bolts?
Survey came back ok
Spoke to the broker asked if i could pay him the total amount and then if everything was ok when i got there we could do the deal and it would be mine from then on. So i would have somewhere to stay.
When i got there i was standing on the pontoon looking at her and was given a bill of sale (and nothing else) and he left.
I had not even set foot on it
The last owner had got the money bought a power boat and cleared off.

When i went through the boat out of a big list of equipment the only thing that worked was a chartplotter and the VHF. The sails are scrap.

I was so fed up that i got back on the plane the next day and didn't even bother locking the boat up. Just walked off and left it there.

Lesson learnt

It has to be said it was all my fault. I was trying to do it on the cheap the boat was at the top end of my budget and i thought i was helping myself by only flying down once and not staying in a hotel. I thought I was saving money??

Whats that saying? A fool and his money.

Did you say you where looking for one of these? Have i got a deal for you!!!
