I've just come across an old notebook with a list of crude oil prices (Indonesian) for Feb 1984. Their Marker Crude (Sumatra Light) was priced at US$29.53/barrel and looking at the weekend paper, Brent Crude (UK Marker) was US$28.05. Every time the price at the pumps goes up they blame it on the price of crude so how come I paid 78.9 pence a litre yesterday when crude is less than it was 18 years ago?

It brings all the current world affairs into perspective when all Dubya's chums must be wringing their hands in glee in between shovelling more billions into their bank accounts. /forums/images/icons/mad.gif

Re: £1.50 ish?

Probably a lot worse, May 96 it was 55.9 p or £2.54 a gallon.
84 was around £1.50 a gal. remember all the media about a £2 gallon !!!!!!.

Do remember filling up fathers Morris Oxford around 1968, 4 gallon and 4d ( that is old pennies ) change out of a £1 pound note.

Cant really remember cost of petrol but I do remember buying my first motor, a classy second hand Riley 1.5 with real leather upholstery in around 1963 for a mere £300 or so.....costs me more than that now just for a bl**dy service..............

What a coincidence! Mine was a Wolseley 1500. Same as the Riley.

Did your family own the company then?? /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

That must have been nearly new.
My first was a A35 van £55 in 67, my mate had a Ford New Anglia around 66 cost £10.

Re: A35 van!

Hand painted blue, no side windows, but we had flasher with the mechanical timer centre top of dash. Also we had the 1100 cc engine, but those back brakes, hydraulic cylinder operating the hand brake!.
Just remembered it had hand made alluminium sills pop riveted on.

In 1973...

...I was an apprentice for BNFL on £8.08p per week. I could put a gallon of 4 star in my BSA 250, buy a packet of 10 No6 cigarettes and buy 7 pints of non-descript bitter down at the works sports & social club and get 1p change out of a quid.

In 79/80 the price of crude was well above what it is now, if I recall rightly it was about $35 a barrel, which at the time fuelled the growth in North Sea Expro - I know, 'cos I was there!!

Its coz the price at the pump has very little to do with the price of crude oil. Nearly all of it is down to that nice Gordon Brown.

The amount of duty and vat has increased massively over recent years. If crude oil doubled in price in would only put around 17p on a litre.

Re: In 1973...

So whats it going to be like in another 30 odd years, Depsol will be in a retirement home extolling the virtues of Soltroff, because of all the damage soltron has done.....TCM's leopard will be an Antibes Little Ship with an avid following of veterans......Paulineb will still be tied to that exercise machine thingy.....Coliholic will still be selling a Mirage, but now it'll be a relic of yesteryear......Me, dunno I'll have just turned 48!

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

But it seems to have gone up about 10 pence in the past few weeks with no change in duty.

In the olden days, if the price had hiked 10 shillings a gallon, there would be mass linchings in Parliament Square!
