I'm putting together my inventory for my 25 ft yacht, can anyone give me advice on mooring warps? What lengths should I carry?

I've found a very cheap supplier of 16mm 3 strand nylon on ebay (search for item 330318465731) so need to know how much to order.

Any help would be welcome.

Thanks

In general,
1x boat length for Bow & Stern lines
1.5 x boat length for each spring. 2 reqd minimum.
These are pinchy minimums, best to 1.5 and 2 x boat length really.

Also, its best to carry a couple of longish length for places like Ostend with stern warp mooring, or if you are rafted up, around 50m each.

Might not, what thickness would you recommend?

Dunno, How big are your cleats? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There's a size guide on the Jimmy Green site ( here ), but this says 10mm for a 26 foot boat, which looks a bit too much like string to me. If your cleats will take 14mm, then I would go for that, otherwise 12mm, maybe? Make sure you can secure the line to the cleat properly (whole new thread) without 'overloading' it - preferably when there is already a loop of line on the cleat (think about rigging a slip-line back to the same cleat).

Get hold of a few bits of line & try it?

Incidentally, there's also a guide to what lines you need, too. ( here )

(No connection with Jimmy Green - they're too expensive for me /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

Nylon is not a good way to go for mooring ropes. It goes hard and become horid, if not impossible to handle on exposure to both sunlight and water. So spend a little more and get polyester lines. Three strand polyester remians noce to handle for years, and you do not need to go to the expense of octoplat, although this is very nice.

Keep nylon to use as an anchor warp, and then spend a little more and get octoplat.

Others here have told you the right lengths.

Good sailing!

Nylon is good for a mooring line that spends most of its life in the locker, i.e. on a boat that lives on a swinger. Would agree, polyester for marina lines out in the sun every day.
When it comes to long shore lines, almost anything will do, but they sometimes need to be long, as the small boat can end up rafted far out.

16mm ..... as strops / heavy stuff maybe - but noty mooring lines ... too hefty.

Here's my rope-locker inventory on my 25ft'r :

I have a 20m heavy warp for towing

Rest are various lengths .....

1 x 12mm x 6m
1 x 10mm x 5m with snap hook
2 x 10mm x 10m with snap hooks
1 x 12mm x 5m
1 x 10mm x 6m with eye
2 x 10mm x 3m pontoon fixed stern lines
1 x 12mm x 20m with snap hook (rafting line)
1 x 12mm x 17.4m
1 x 12mm x 5.6m with eye
1 x 12mm x 11.8m
1 x 12mm x 11.5m
1 x 12mm x 6.8m
1 x 10mm x 10.8m eyed both ends
1 x 8mm x 15.1m
1 x 8mm x 2.3m
1 x 8mm x 3.1m
1 x 18mm x 9.1m with eye
1 x 12mm x 2m with eye
1 x 6mm x 20.3m throwing line with Monkeys fist attached.

Yes - I inventoried my bosuns locker !!

Tee hee.
Currently, Full Circle, including all warps, halyards etc has 1.24km of rope onboard.

Thanks for that, that certainly has answered my question!
Just one other thing, can anyone recommend a good place to get a thimble spliced onto the end of rope? I have seen Jimmy Green can do it, but wondered if there was any good (Ie cheap) alternative suppliers?

Yep - DIY ! Seriously ... once you get it done - you'll wonder why you ever wanted to pay some dude to do it.

As to Full Circles 1.24KM of rope - that is some amount.

I've added up the inventory above, then added halyards, sheets, spinnaker stuff, anchor kedge lines etc. and get under 500m I have others I can add in .... like lines I use to turn the boat in my channel ... 2 x 20m 3 strands with snap-hooks ... couple of strops to buoys ... still only just over 500m and I'm definitely overloaded with cordage.

Clues Nigel:
I have 18 clutches in the cockpit. All those lines have to come from somewhere.
then there is 3 anchors.......plus spare warps

2 Spin halyards, 2 Genoa halyards, spare main halyard, removeable forestay, 3 reefs, kicker, topping lift,

Several sets of mooring lines and extra long ropes - one at 500 feet.

There is of course a little tongue in cheek going on here.. My lazyjacks are 140m of 4mm

My wife says I am a fetishist. Probably true.
