How much Hp to plane

I have just bought a little 3.2 m Sib with inflatable keel. How much Hp outboard min do you think I need to get this on the plane with 2 average sized people in it. I want to keep overall weight down.

Would a 6 hp do the job or do I need to go to 8hp. This is just a commuter tender but would be nice to have a little fun from time to time

I had a 3.1m air deck with a 9.8hp Tohatsu two-stroke (brilliant outboard) - and it would plane with two big blokes on board, although one of them had to be hanging out over the bow to get it up on the plane. Great fun. Based on that I suspect your 6hp won't be enough.

PS a quick google suggests that a Yam four stroke 6hp outboard is about the same weight as the 9.8hp two stroke I mention above - so if keeping the weight down is as important as getting on the plane, I'd suggest seeking out a two-stroke.

You probably need a decent 9.9hp - 8hp may do it but it would be marginal

I can plane with a 9.8 4 stroke Tohatsu on a Honwave 3.8 (High pressure air deck) with 2 up so I think all of the responses above are about right. Bit twitchy though with tiller steering.....;-)

I just came back from a trip up the river and saw a bloke in what looked like a 2.6 or 2.8 airdeck with I thini a 4 hp on the back and it looked like it was on the plane. Not sure if I am correct but it was going nice and fast

I have a Honwave 3.2 m sib and a 5 hp Honda 4 stroke attached.

I can just get up on the plane single handed and do around 13 mph on gps.

So a 10 hp should get two up on the plane.....

You need at least 8 hp and you might as well get a 9.9 cos if you look around they are the same weight as the 8hp. NB The Yamaha 8 hp is the exception.

Fit a set of Dolphin fins. They help getting up on the plane.

When looking for a small OB I would rather eat worms than buy a 4 st.

I have a zodiac Fastroller 310 air deck. With just me (14.5 stone) and a 5hp it will get on the plane. Much more weight and it won't (that's a 2t ob)

Ob of choice according to rib forums is the tohatsu 9.8 2 stroke. You will need to search online for suppliers as main dealers in the EU can't sell them to you.
