Just wondering if any of the Solent and South Coast marinas will see sense this year when it comes to charging for overnight stays. Last year we were paying £35 a night (+ electric) for a 36 footer in East Cowes. I can't see too many people wanting to pay that in the current economic climate . .

We paid 38.00 for 1 night in Lymington yh as the town which is our favourite was full at the time, then they asked us if we were interested in an annual mooring, no wonder the waiting list has gone!

Well, FWIW, we were paying more than that in Croatia for a town quay mooring in May 08. We tried to rebook through the same holiday company and the Croatians have more or less doubled their costs apparently, this year. As a result, a 38 footer would be £70-80 per night in Croatia this year. The holiday company has pulled out of Croatia and we've just booked for a week in Greece instead...

not sure how much you think it can come down? After all, at some point it would become cheaper to pay by the day than the (six mont?) season....
Whats good value ? £25? But £35 isnt..? With MDL we now get a whole month free at other (MDL) marinas.

Yes Croatia is expensive, at least 2 euro per night per meter Boatlength,
but on the other hand, it is a cruising area with so many anchorage places around the islands, where you can stay foc and a its more quite and private then in a marina.
Swimming around the bout, late at night, and first thing in the morning, ever done this ?
We know quite a few beautifull places, well covered from the elements, if somebody is interested

I very much doubt that they will discount visitor fees but it certainly does make us think about where we go and for how long.

We are raggies and frequently make a weekend visit to Lymington from our base in Poole, most often going on the Friday evening and back on the Sunday, so two nights to pay for. We used to use the marinas regularly a few years back with our last boat but our current one cost £43/night last time we asked Berthon in 2007, so £86 for our 2 nights back then. We now use the visitor moorings at £16/night but have already thought we might now just drop the hook off Hurst on the Friday night and go in first thing to Lymington, no time lost but half the cost for the weekend and probably nearly £200 saved over the season.

On holiday we go to Southern Brittany for 5 weeks and anchor whenever we can because we prefer it, just using marinas every 5 or 6 days for food and water stockups. Depending on the weather not driving us in we have spent as little as £135 for the whole 5 weeks but that could be gone in just a couple of weekends at Berthon.

I hate just going out for a daytrip and much prefer to have a destination and overnight away, but when the home berth is paid for and a vistor one too expensive it does make us think about modifying our habits of 35 years!

would be nice if they did some deals, even this time of the year, was in Brighton last week and was charged the same and we were the only visitors there

You don't want to go to Ibiza then. We paid €180 per night for a 15m mooring in Botafoch in 2004. Haven't been back since but I guess it's €200+ per night now and the costs are similar at St Eulalia and Formentera too

I honestly can't see it making a difference. Let's face it - it's not a cheap pastime and an extra £35 for an overnight is a drop in the ocean as I see it!

!am told the Croatians are now charging for anchoring too, is that correct?

no that's not correct, you just need a license for the whole area (about 100 euro for a 30ft boat, for one year)
There is one very beautifull anchorage place (Polace on the island Mljet) which is in fact in a natural park, where you have to pay a fee for anchorage, but from the 5 years I have been there, I have only been charged ones for that.
There are some places where there are private anchorage pots, afcause you need to pay if you want to use these,
but last summer I have spend many nights anchored around Croation islands, and I only had to pay for the one night in Polace, and that one was worth every Kuna /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

It is if you want it to be .... and then £35/night is very expensive ....

I doubt the cost of weekend overnight berths will reduce.
last year on the odd occasions we stayed overnight in the Solent we had difficulty in getting in anywhere.

Diesel was as expensive as it will be this year, that stops many boats going away which reduces the amount of space the marina has to let to visitors.

Others book weeks in advance for Bank Holidays and then dont go anywhere as the wind is forecast for F6-7 200 miles away.

£35 is expensive but does not put us off as much as the hassle of actually securing a berth for the night.

You don't want to go to Croatia for a cheap holliday, like Spain used to be,
but on average, cost of living is the same or cheaper then here in Belgium,
especially if you find the local restaurants and bars in the small villages. The avarage income in Croatia is less then half from here.
On the other hand, the better restaurants in famous bay's on islands are usually over priced as the only visitors are "rich" boat owners ???
their excuse is that they have to transport all the goods from mainland..etc.
Although most boaters are around the Kornati islands, IMHO the most beautifull part is the south, starting in Dubrovnic, and then Elafiti islands (Loput, Calamota,Sipan), Mljet, Korchula, Hvar, Vis, Brac,
and places on mainland like Makarska, Split, Trogir, ...
pls mail for tips or nice mooring places
