Hey all, new to this forum and about to buy our first boat :)

How much would i expect to pay for a survey and sea trial please?

This is what is included in the quote i have

Main control points:
STRUCTURE: bottom of hull, floors, stratification, collage of the backing mould
ENGINE*: oil test, stern gland, belts, silent bloc, engine controls, transmission, sea trial**
Other checkpoints:
INTERIOR:
Facilities, sealing portholes and plexis, trought hull fittings, automatic/manual bilge pump, tank, fresh water circuit,
water heater, refrigerator, gas, lighting, WC, sink, kitchen, batteries, battery charger, electrical panel, electronics,
autopilot, generator, safety on board, etc ...
OUTSIDE:
Underwater: bubbling and hull state, line shaft, propeller, chair, anodes, rudder, trought hull, etc ...
Dead works: hull condition, deck condition, candlestick, chain, anchor, windlass, deck gear, portholes and plexis
status, turnbuckels rigging running rigging, lighting, steering system, engine control, bimini, etc

Thanks

Colin

Generally the surveyor will not be an expert on engines and will only look at them superficially. It is worth engaging an engineer who is a specialist in the particular brand (in this case Cats) and experienced in the model to inspect the engines , undertake oil samples and attend the sea trial. The engineer can not undertake any dismantling to inspect the internals of the engine.

The engines are probably no longer in production, what are spares and major component availability?

Bear in mind that a pair of new engines represents a serious chunk of the asking price of the whole boat, a pair of 350hp engines fitted probably £70k. So its important to not buy a boat with duff engines.

Reading the list as you have already stated it’s a motor boat the list you have must be a text book list and not a factual list that the said surveyor is going to carry out.
The reason I’m saying this is because the model of boat doesn’t have any rigging or running rigging .

My advice to you is find an engineer that is familiar with caterpillar engines ( I am )
And a surveyor that knows Traders very well , I say this based on where and how they are built.
As this is your first boat I’d tread very carefully.

A number of UK surveyors will be happy to travel to France. I used a surveyor in SoF a couple of years ago and they also organised for the engine manufacturers to do an engine survey. Where in France is the boat?

Hi

I’ve just had a survey completed in frejus by a English surveyor. He is very conscientious guy if you pm me I can forward his details, he’s out to France most weeks so can share costs of flights etc with others
