My Oyster 39 has a nicely designed canvas spray hood with a cockpit cover. The stitching is failing, it has stretched and now it has been a victim of the storm. I have a quote for £1500 for a replacement. Is that reasonable?DSCF1854.jpg

Perhaps no. The sprayhood for our 40ft boat was recently repaired by a company in Gosport and they quoted £875 for a complete replacement. Didn't include a cockpit cover though ... ...

Two years ago we had one made, sprayhood was OK. The price was a couple of hundred less, so yes.

Very reasonable indeed - I was around £2500 for a new sprayhood & cockpit cover for a 27ft boat and that was 10 years ago although it did include new a new SS frame.

I've just bought a new sprayhood from Hallberg-Rassy in Sweden, £450 inc shipping. It's beautifully made, and has zips and a window. A full cockpit cover would have been another £750.

I paid 1200 for one for SR about 4 years ago. It wasn't the cheapest quote, but the only quote that was prepared to do what I asked for. :( Mine is in fact 2x sprayhoods (one is over the aft cabin and faces astern) with a zip out centre section plus roll up sides and plenty of windows so I can actually motor around with it all up in the winter. I had all the frames fitted, but it had to be measured & fitted on the boat.

So £1500 is probably a little high considering they have the old one as a pattern, but maybe not too dear if you are darn sarf.

I paid around £2200 for replacement spray hood, cockpit tent, stack pack and dodgers. A lot of time went into the bespoke design. Lots of roll up doors and plenty of zip work!

Hood alone cost should be around £600.00.The aft section if it has lots of zips and windows etc can easily be £900 plus .If thats fitted on board for you its a good price especially if it includes i VAT?.
.If its stretched is not always possible to use it as a pattern. The best job would be to make a new pattern over the existing bars, that way the mistakes and stretched areas are not copied.

If the old are good enough to use as templates and you feel inclined, a Sailrite sewing machine costs about £750 and materials maybe £300. Our machine has more than paid for itself.

I inherited a Reeds Sailmaker from my mum, but I have had no success with it. I tried repairing the sail covers but I couldn't get it to work. Maybe I was using too thick a thread or the wrong type of needles...just kept jamming.

High price, for a cover only, but par for UK.

I paid €500 for my last one in Argeles, and have been quoted £600 her in UK - try Crusader.

I'd expect one for your boat to be more than that, say £900 using a top quality acrylic. Of course if the sailmaker is coming and measuring and then returning to fit the price is probably only about 20% high.

Oceanis 390 frame and cover from NV in France €850 2 seasons ago. additional hand grab stainless bar, Zip out centre section over hatch for ventilation and leather stengthening/anti dirt grab panel on rim and flaps for deck run halyards and sheets. Came with all fitting hardware. Paid about £150 to have internal privacy panels with velcro attachments fitted.

Start a new thread on the theme (Ha), I am sure there are a lot of experienced seamstresses on the panel.

A sewing machine is a most useful piece of kit but they can be tricky when you are new to them.
