How much does it cost to get on the plane

Look, Mate, if you can't afford to do your hobby properly

Since when is being considerate to yachties a requirement for "proper" motor boating?

And if it is, showing appreciation should be an equal requirement so if you can't afford DAKA a beer when he comes off the plane for you, you shouldn't be on the water either...

I take a fair amount of care when dealing with sailing yachts and also boats which are stationary enjoying a bit of fishing. Contrary to popular myth regarding the attitude of motor boat skippers I don't think I am unusual or unique in the approach I take.

What does concern me sometimes is the type of vessels out there in the open water. My wake is chicken feed compared to what might be encountered.

I don't think we should be pussy footing around out there, commercial ships, ferries and mother nature throw up far greater risks but consideration costs nothing from both sides. If a small deviation from my course helps smooth the waters then I'm happy to oblige. There will always be instances where one side feels the other could have acted differently and I'm sure we will never fully bridge the motor / sail divide.

For what it's worth, in three years with my small sailing boat in Southampton Water and the Solent, I don't remember ever feeling inconvenienced by a motor-boat passing too close. I can't think of any significant incidents from 20 years of sailing off and on before that, either.

Whether that's because most people are considerate or because the wash from a moderate-sized planing boat really isn't that big a deal, or a combination of the two, I'm not really sure. Maybe it's also because I don't often find myself in what sound like known trouble spots (Chichester entrance etc).

All I ask from power boats while I'm under sail is that they don't hit me (or pass so close as to look as if they might), and that's just ordinary good seamanship. I certainly don't expect people to drop off the plane or take massive detours around me.

The only exception is in really flat-calm weather, when wash can shake what little wind there is out of the sails, so it's nice if it can be avoided. But it's not like I can demand that.

You'll be dropping off the plane a thousand yards from any harbour entrance in most of the eastern Solent then won't you?

1000 yards sounds a lot but I dont really know, we didnt do yards at school :D

I guestimate a modern conversion factor and I drop off the plane when I feel it prudent to do so , which depends on an awful lot of factors.

Sailing boats tacking likely to impede or not

Sign showing speed restriction

Other stinkers about to rock me

Babe on beach glancing my way

Harbour master standing by

Shallow water

If Im ready for a beer and need to send crew downstairs

+1

I also note the course & size of sailing boats - if they're a reasonable size, close hauled and will cross the wake at 90 degrees I doubt they're too bothered by me shooting across their bows, especially as I don't cut close across them. If they running in a light breeze in the same direction as me and I'm overtaking I try to keep well clear as they're probably already rolling a bit and my wake beam on won't be welcomed.
