I've got 50+ metres of chain; I've only once had the whole lot out, and that was when the engine cut out in 20m of water and I needed to anchor temporarily while help arrived from the adjacent marina!
Note that on the West Coast, your swinging room will often constrain the amount of chain you have out to less than the 4 or 5 times maximum depth that is often recommended. On the other hand, anchorages tend to be very well sheltered. Others have remarked on the often steeply shelving nature of some anchorages!
