So any boat can use fuel at 40p legally after Nov 2008 ,but with an initial out lay of £450 it would take the average boater on 30 hours , years to recoup their investment, and the doom and gludy merchants will be quick to point out they dont have a spare wheel well. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Maybe this will put the value of old boats up, as they don't have modern, clean direct injection engines that can actually USE self made bio diesel.

Someone tell HLB, he wcan begin constructing his bio plant immediatly.

I have had another thought, assuming your boat is jointly owned by you and the SWMBO - doesn;t that mean you each have 2500 litres per year as a personal allowance? So together you have 5000 litres!

Who is making the fuel this weekend darling? Me or you.....

I am on the dreaded Petrol too, I haven't kept an exact tally but the boat has been in the water since 11th August and based in Hamble and haven't been past Hurst narrows yet but even so still done at least 35 Hours - at 12 gallons an hour! gulp that's 420 gallons.

Surely I haven't used that much? praps bimbling around at displacement speed doesn't use much? I hope.

I reckon in my case
a] The boats value may firm up a bit against a diesel version
b] The cost benefit of a re-engine with diesel will never equate ie new petrol engines £9k V diesels £25k [so will the demand for diesels for re-engining drop followed by the price?

Paul.

Yup, you are supposed to volunteer the information yourself to the IR and I'm sure that everyone will as UK boaters are thoroughly decent and law abiding bunch or so I'm told

I'm not so sure. Firstly, a diesel is not £25K, more like £15K. Diesel will still be much more efficient 6gph cruising against 10gph on petrol so even if fuel is the same price, there is still a decent saving to made by running diesel.

Then there is the availability thing. Anyone who wants to venture further than their base marina, is going to find petrol difficult to get, (unless you are in the Solent).

SO, it won't make as much sense as it makes now, but will still make sense.

I don't know how IR can check you are not using more than 2500L per annum - presumably they would have to film you in Tescos buying drums of the stuff then putting it in your boat.

I've got to say if I had an older boat with engines that can use veg oil directly I would certainly consider doing a 50% veg 50% diesel mix next year to keep the costs down.

Having looked at the dieselveg site they talk about having engines converted? I thought diesels qould run on the stuff without any changes - or am I wrong?

Its the direct injection engines that need a pre-heater on the veg oil. Older engines can use the stuff directly. There is a load of info on the Pajero Owners club site in the forums.

Look in the "Bio-diesel / SVO / alternative fuels" forum for people who are actually running their Pajero's on chip fat.

I reckon about 70p if you produce some yourself. Just means you take a couple of Jerry cans with you each time you go to the marina & top up at the fuel barge, which would give me about 50 miles each time I go out. Tesco currently use 50/50 mix in their unconverted distribution fleet with no problems. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I like these polls.

Being a raggie with an outboard I average 120 engine hours per year using 3/4 gallon per hour at 4 to 5 knots. This equals about £450 pounds/year assuming a mix of forecourt and marina petrol. the motoring is possibly about a third of total hours, as where I want to go is straight into the wind ....

Am I doing something wrong? Apart fom replying to a poll that says diesel planning boats only!

Boat now 2 1/2 years old.

First year 150 hours
second year 150 hours
this year 60 hours

Mainly because the weather has been so crap.
now its got better i am too busy to get to the boat

But to answer the other side of the question which many have indicated.....

will it change my boating habits?

YES

Still Dunno is up for sale at a lot less than i paid for her and when the deal is done i shall be crossing to the dark side and buying a saily boat thingy /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Why?
Several personal reasons, some relate to a business venture which will drain resources for a while.....add the extra cost of fuel from next year and i was either going to have to give up on this great hobby that i love or find a cheaper way to do it.

Anyone want a Sealine S29 with ALL the faults ironed out?

Well, our merryfisher is just over 6 months old and we've clocked I think 50 hours since first service. It's petrol powered, so the diesel hike won't affect us, but we're taking Sarabands' advice and going the motorsailer route, probably next year with the Imexus (Odin) route. Yes, I KNOW it's cheating but we will be able to sail and motor if needed/wanted. Honestly though, it's got a lot of room inside, won't cost us much more in berthing and gives us the range increase that I would like, plus the outboard is (relatively) easy & cheap to service and no worries about stern glands/ shaft alignment issues that seem to crop up here with depressing (to me anyway) regularity. Right, tin hats everybody, I'm now getting in my trench to avoid shrapnell !
