How long takes to Sail from Cork (IRE) to London (UK)?

Guys,
Again, many thanks to you all, extremely instructive input and inspiring ideas. Just to feedback you, the story is a Hard Science Fiction (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_science_fiction) so the importance of the accuracy in the real world events, in sci-fi stories we have already a bunch of “make-believe” elements so keeping the real world “REAL” is always my intention.

NOT a terror film as the "interdenominational" typo (read: interdimensional) would suggest, sorry.

So, after reading and considering all of your posts I ended up with:

Because of (most suggested by you) unfavourable weather/dead wind and other minor adversities (I can’t reveal you what, I want you to watch in the movie LOL) they are one day behind of schedule, so they decide to stop in Brighton instead of going all the way to London, in my last post I said they would stop in Margate but I just realized that Brighton (50 miles) actually is closer to London than Margate (70 miles), when I lived in SE London I used to take a Sunday morning and drive to Gravesend and then a "small stretch” to Margate, I used to think like “it’s just there in the next corner”, and then be back home to lunch time. Because that I primarily chose Margate (sorry shaunksb LOL)

We were talking 3 days Cork to London, now we are talking 3 days Cork to Brighton; according to you all, shortening the sailing journey would give us a “more” plausible scenario, nobody would say that was impossible to be accomplished right?

Specs:
BOAT: Dufour 44 (I can’t find out the newest year of production, can you?)
CONDITIONS: Sails only (no motoring, unpractical to make engines runs) and magnetic compass only.
CREW: 5 (2 experienced, 2 not, 1 child (but can help))
OFFICIAL RATIONED FOOD: Fray Bentos TINNED PIE (lol)
(if Fray Bentos wants advert contact me LOL, well that would be also true to anything advertisable, I’m not the producer but if I have something already pre-arranged would help push the script to the top of production list LOL….. Dufour 44 or any other boat builders??)

My last question I promise ?
Is there any standard backup communication equipment in boats that does not rely in electronics to communicate? I saw once an emergency kind of radio (I can’t give specs now, I’m still researching on it) that could be hand cranked to TX/RX Morse code and voice?

I can’t express my gratefulness to you all, I was suggested (by: AngusMcDoon) to give also the YBW Forum thanks in the ending credits (I will gladly do it but I have yet to talk to them to agreements), nonetheless all of you who want your username or real name listed too, please PM me (do not send your details yet, only your interest to be recorded, I will contact you back when the time is right)

Cheers,
Mark.

No not really.

You could use semaphore but you would need a warship or someone over 105 to understand it.

Of course hand held VHF radios can work on ordinary batteries, or if you were clever and knew about elektrickery you could probably lash up a connection to the wind generator or solar panel to make it work.

I can't add anything to the experts views on sailing, but if it's any use you don't need an interdimensional portal to kill electrics. Patrick Tilley used aliens with global force fields in Fade Out.

Far more realistic :D:D:D

Thanks mate, but You are forgetting that hand held radios are made of electronics parts, and wind and solar generators needs complex electronics "circuitkery" to convert those energy into usable electricity. So no alternative communication devices :-(

I know I said I would make no more questions but...

If you are in the middle of the Ocean with dead wind, how does the wind come by?
a) A faint blow and then grow stronger and stronger.
b) Or a full blow? full-filling the sails at once (I don't know the right sailors' jargon for that?)

Cheers,

Mark.

Thanks guys, I know that, when I mentioned the "interdimensional portal" I also said that I was misleading you all with a different reason for the hypothetical situation of having no electronics at all, because I don't want to give up the real plot of my story.

Cheers,
Mark.

Or an EMP
