How long did you, or should you, search for the perfect boat?

It has just come to my attention that Wansworth had already embarked on his (still ongoing) search for a boat way back in September of 2009! At that point he had just dismissed a Snapdragon, and was getting excited about a Colvic Sailer 26.

It is surprising that he still manages to find new (old) models to tease us with, but kudos to him for hanging in there and keeping his nose to the grindstone of his quest for so long.

I bought a boat in the Uk and then sold it just before the dreaded covid

You have shattered my illusions! I had you down as a man on a mission, exemplifying grit, determination and perseverance.

Now it turns out you are a dilettante - a dreamer like the rest of us! ;)

Some people seem to change their boat with the tide!
I'm a sticker, I had my last boat for 16 years, which gave me plenty of time to decide on the type of boat that I would like to own. Then when I wanted to go further I changed to my current boat, which has all the features I wanted, that was 22 years ago.
Also long ownership gives you a chance to alter what you don't like.

I operate at the cheaper rate end of things, and usually set a budget, make a shortlist of suitable models and then start watching the market. I enjoy the research part immensely, but usually end up having bought something within a 3-6 month period. I try not to rule anything out, and as a result of this I have also recently ended up with… a Westerly Fulmar. ?

I was looking at a westerly tempest today in the marina -don’t see much about them on this forum unlike other westerly marques. I’m sure the Fulmar will give many years of service and there are many sources of advice out there of course.

There are that many boats of difference out there i dont think i will find my perfic boat ( unless i come by a winning lottery ticket to get a Grandbanks ) . My now boat i have wanted for over 25 years i bet and i still see other boats i rather like but i have at last got one of these, and even as its not ready to go yet i know it will have all i need and want.

The Tempest is a bit of a marmite boat due to the interior layout. There is no fore cabin, just a large storage area that morphs into the toilet compartment. The main cabin is short as there are a pair of aft cabins and between you have either the galley or nav station facing outboard. Also only just 107 were built compared to 440 Fulmar's. Personally I dislike the layout but 2 friends both have one and love them. One day I took some Centaur owners out for a sail as they were thinking of getting either a Tempest or a Fulmar. Well one of my friends was on board his Tempest and showed them his boat. When they returned to Concerto, they disliked the Tempest like me, however they are now Fulmar owners.
