I was thinking yesterday whilst down on my boat how many vacant berths are currently available. I keep my boat in Weymouth and at a rough estimate I reckon there are 20-40 berths available of varying sizes!

I remember pre-bank crisis, Weymouth always had a waiting list for berths so we're obviously a long way from the good times.

How busy, or quiet is your marina??

Could be that the empty berths at your Weymouth Marina are because the boats normally occupying them are currently ashore for the winter, as this is certainly the case at Premier Swanwick Marina.

Operating a waiting list at ours.

The berths that appear empty, ours being one of them at the moment, are boats ashore or away.

The replies thus far would seem to indicate that most marinas are fairly full which is great news, but I am surprised as had the impression that you can get a berth just about anywhere these days, perhaps the industry is not in such a bad state after all, if you use this forum you gain an impression that the industry is doomed

Nice to read good news for a change, and delighted to hear marinas are busy

Yes it's definitely quieter out of season, but these are empty berths & have been for quite some time now. The majority are 6 & 8m berths but there are also larger ones available

Why not ask in the marina office?

We have some smaller berths that are almost always empty but they are paid for when you look on the board in the office.

Are there any properties attached to the marina?

you might find that the berths are "lease berths" attached to properties on site, in which case, the marina may not be able to put boats on them and the lease holders may not have boats to put on them!

Yep they're empty berths, I remember in the summer the harbour office were even renting them out on a casual temporary basis. All the pontoon gates have signs on them stating that berths are available etc.

As far as I'm aware, none of the local properties have harbour berths included in their deeds

Tried to get a quote from Soton Town Quay marina and they are full with a waiting list for 11 metres, Bucklers Hard also full. Other marinas hard to judge as others have said because so many boats are ashore

I know quite a few boats migrated to portland's new marina when it opened, where there are the benefits of quayside petrol & diesel and not having to deal with the lifting bridge

steve are you a berth holder in Dean and Reddyhoff as I am because when speaking to Neil the other week they have no free berths for anything above 40ft and are thinking of taking some fingers out of the smaller berths and making way for bigger boats as they just don't have any space, there was 1 free berth on D pontoon next to my old berth and 3 people wanted it and it was 1st come 1st served that berth went the same weekend
